Job Description

Role & responsibilities

1. Hydrological & Water Resource Analysis

  • Conduct

    water availability studies

to determine firm and secondary energy potential.
  • Perform

    power potential studies

to optimize plant capacity and energy output.
  • Execute

    flood studies

    , including:
    • Hydrograph analysis, Unit Hydrograph development, and Peak Flood Estimation.
    • Flood Frequency Analysis (Annual/Partial Duration Series) to determine

      Standard Project Flood (SPF)

      and

      Probable Maximum Flood (PMF)

      .
    • Reservoir and Channel Flood Routing.
  • Lead

    reservoir sedimentation studies

to forecast long-term siltation, establish new zero elevations, and assess project lifespan.

2. Planning & Conceptual Design

  • Develop initial ideas and concepts for the

planning and designing of Hydro projects and PSP

    .
  • Define the

general layout of the water conductor system

(intakes, tunnels, penstocks, surge shafts, tailraces).
  • Conduct

    reservoir planning

, including establishing various reservoir zones and developing Area-Elevation and Storage-Elevation curves.
  • Create

    initial filling plans

    for new reservoirs.
  • Plan

    river diversion arrangements

, including coffer dams and diversion tunnels/channels.

3. Detailed Hydraulic Design & Analysis

  • Review and perform preliminary hydraulic designs for all hydraulic structures:
    • Dams, Barrages, Intakes, and Water Conductor Systems.
    • Spillways, Energy Dissipation arrangements (e.g., plunge pools, stilling basins), and Desilting Chambers.
    • Surge Shafts/Tanks and Transient Analysis for system stability.
    • Cross-drainage structures (Bridges, Culverts), Guide Bunds, and Flood Protection Embankments.
  • Perform critical calculations including:
    • Head loss calculations for waterways.
    • Uplift pressure calculations for structures.
    • Soil and Rock Scour calculations.
    • Depth of cut-off and design of protection works.
    • Water surface profiles in rivers.
  • Design comprehensive drainage systems for project areas and powerhouse drainage.

4. Numerical Modeling & Simulation

  • Conduct

    1D and 2D numerical analysis

    in

    HEC-RAS

for flood modeling, dam break studies, and water surface profiles.
  • Perform advanced

    3D numerical analysis

    in software like

    Flow-3D Hydro

for complex flow patterns, sediment transport, and structure interaction.
  • Carry out

    transient analysis

    using software (e.g.,

    WHAMO

    ,

    Hammer

) to design and optimize surge shafts/tanks and protect the pipeline system.
  • Formulate numerical models, run simulations, and analyze results to identify and rectify design flaws.

5. Dam Safety & Risk Mitigation

  • Conduct

    Dam Break Studies

to model inundation maps and develop

    Flood Damage Mitigation

    plans.
  • Perform verifications for key design levels (Top of Dam, Spillway invert, Intake invert) and structure sizes (Spillway bays).
  • Ensure designs meet all safety guidelines for selecting design floods and return periods.

6. Integration & Collaboration

  • Interface with geotechnical, civil, and mechanical teams to integrate hydraulic requirements.
  • Understand

    topographic and bathymetric survey

    data and utilize

    Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

    for spatial analysis.
  • Coordinate with and

    understand Physical Model Studies

(hydraulic and sediment) to validate numerical models.
  • Compare numerical and physical model results to refine designs and ensure accuracy.

7. Documentation & Reporting

  • Prepare

    Design Basis Reports

    and detailed

    Hydraulic Design Reports

    .
  • Perform

    quantity estimation

for cost planning and tender documents.
  • Document all analyses, assumptions, and conclusions for client and regulatory submission.

Preferred candidate profile

Specializing in both Hydraulics and Hydrology disciplines, are responsible for Review of Hydrological Studies and Hydraulic Designs for Hydro Power and Pump Storage Project components (Intake, Dam, Barrage, Energy dissipation arrangement, Spillway, Desilting Basin, HRT, Pressure Shaft / Penstock, Upstream Surge shaft and downstream Surge Chamber and Tail race system) and finalize the General Layout arrangements of the Projects. Understanding of technical specifications for Tender projects and Review of hydraulic design reports as per IS codes, CEA / CWC guidelines, CBIP and USBR Guidelines etc.
