Design Engineer

Job Description

JOB PURPOSE: The Engineer, Design in the Switch and Socket business is responsible for the conceptualization, design, and development of electrical switches and sockets. This role involves creating innovative, safe, and cost-effective solutions that align with market trends and customer needs. The Design Engineer will work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure the products are manufacturable, meet regulatory requirements, and maintain high quality standards. Additionally, the role includes improving existing designs, conducting performance testing, and implementing improvements to enhance product reliability and user experience. KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES: To prepare technical specifications based on Customer voice and marketing requirements. To make and record teardown/ breakdown analysis for the competitor products (Technical Benchmark study). To prepare product feasibility study and prepare mockup sample for ID approval. To perform the design of sheet metal and plastic enclosures, sub-assemblies and assemblies that meet the mechanical, thermal and DFA/DFM / Pre MFA or MFA for Plastic parts / FEA requirement of the system. Product design should adhere to the IEC, BS, SASO standards requirement. Review the design with the Cross functional team and update the design according to their feedback. To interact with the Manufacturing Engineering team in identifying appropriate vendors and developing prototypes of parts and sub-assemblies within the prototype budgeted cost. To analyze, test the prototypes (Proto Verification stage) and document the proto test results / field trail results. Refine the design based on the prototype testing result. To prepare and evaluate the final design specifications in the form of 3D CAD models, 2D detail drawings. To interact with the CFT to decide to release Parts for manufacturing after Stage Gate Review and release 3D & 2D data for tooling. To discuss and support PCB assembly design, sub-system and system Participate and support in design reviews (DFM) during tool design. Support qualification activities for new parts based on the Sample Inspection Report. To conduct Design Verification test on the tooled-up parts. Perform lead role in uploading documents in PDM (Windchill or SAP ECTR or Teamcenter). Prepare a Bill of Materials. Generating part specifications in the database, creating Assembly drawings for product certification. Bring new ideas for VA/VE & Assist in performing DFMEA Assist in qualification of new parts/subassemblies (Assembly Trails). Ability to estimate the time required for the completion of a job/project. COMPETENCIES: Mechanical product design knowledge (Design of Switches and Sockets, or any other electronic products) Knowledge of sheet metal and plastic design Knowledge in PLM / PDM Competent in 3D CAD modelling. Knowledge of plastic and sheet metal manufacturing processes and tooling desirable Knowledge of regulatory requirements is desirable. Ability to design an experimental setup for evaluation Software skills/ Job Specific Skills Knowledge and demonstrated experience using CAD software. Tools like Pro-Engineer/CREO (desirable), AutoCAD etc. Competency in Analysis Simulation tools. Any Managerial Skills added advantage. Strong presentation and communication skills and ability to document the work output. Ability to draw useful inference/ conclusions with the available information. Collaborative behavior - Willingness to share knowledge and experience with functional /other team members. Ability to estimate the time required for the completion of a job/project. Software Skill: Proficiency in Pro Engineer (CREO)
