Roles and Responsibilities
Explain Procedures:
Inform patients about the CT scan process to ease any concerns and ensure they understand the procedure.Patient Positioning:
Correctly position patients on the CT scanner bed to obtain high-quality images, ensuring comfort and safety.Monitor Patient Comfort:
Ensure the patient is comfortable and remain calm during the procedure. This may involve helping patients with medical devices or managing claustrophobic patients.
Operating the CT Scanner
Equipment Operation:
Operate the CT scanner to capture cross-sectional images of the body.Adjust Imaging Settings:
Adjust the scanner settings, such as radiation dose, based on the body part being scanned, patients condition, and diagnostic requirements.Monitor and Control:
Monitor the CT machine during the procedure to ensure optimal image quality and patient safety.
Image Quality and Evaluation
Image Assessment:
Review images for quality, clarity, and completeness before sending them to the radiologist or physician.Repeat Scans if Necessary:
If images are unclear or inadequate, repeat the scan to ensure accurate results.Record Keeping:
Document images and the patient's details in the medical record system.
Radiation Safety
Minimize Radiation Exposure:
Follow protocols to ensure the lowest possible radiation dose is administered to the patient while maintaining image quality.Use of Protective Equipment:
Ensure the use of shielding such as lead aprons, thyroid collars, etc., when necessary.Follow Safety Protocols:
Adhere to safety guidelines, including proper handling of radioactive materials and maintaining a sterile environment.
Collaboration with Healthcare Providers
Work with Radiologists and Physicians:
Communicate effectively with radiologists and doctors to ensure accurate imaging for proper diagnosis.Provide Patient Information:
Provide relevant patient history or clinical information to assist in image interpretation.
Maintenance and Calibration
Routine Equipment Checks:
Perform regular maintenance on the CT scanner, including calibration, cleaning, and troubleshooting minor technical issues.Report Malfunctions:
Immediately report any technical or mechanical problems with the scanner to the appropriate technical support team.
Patient Monitoring and Safety
Monitor Patient Vital Signs:
In some cases, particularly for more complex procedures, monitor the patient's vital signs and overall health during the scan.Emergency Response:
Be prepared to respond to emergencies and provide necessary first aid in case of complications.
Confidentiality and Record Keeping
Maintain Patient Privacy:
Ensure that all patient information, including images and medical records, is handled in accordance with privacy laws such as HIPAA.Accurate Documentation:
Record and maintain proper documentation of procedures and patient interactions.
Continuous Learning and Development
Stay Updated:
Keep current with technological advancements, new scanning techniques, and best practices in radiology.Professional Certification:
Maintain necessary certifications, including continuing education courses, as required by licensing bodies.
