Role & responsibilities

The Copy Editor cum Proofreader will meticulously review and refine manuscripts for fiction and non-fiction genres. This role requires a keen eye for detail, exceptional language skills, and the ability to provide constructive feedback to enhance the overall narrative structure, character development, and thematic coherence. The ideal candidate will balance the precision of copy editing with the insight of proofreading to help authors polish their manuscripts to perfection.

Preferred candidate profile

  • Review manuscripts for grammar, punctuation, spelling, syntax, and consistency.
  • Ensure clarity, coherence, and readability of the text.
  • Maintain the author's voice and style while correcting language issues.
  • Verify the accuracy of facts and adherence to style guidelines.
  • Suggest improvements for sentence structure and word choice to enhance readability and impact.
  • Conduct thorough grammar checks to ensure error-free manuscripts.
  • Perform fact-checking to ensure the accuracy of all factual information, dates, and references.
  • Format headings and titles according to the specific style guide (e.g., APA, Chicago, MLA MAINLY Chicago).
  • Set tables and figures appropriately within the manuscript, ensuring clarity and proper labeling.
  • Ensure consistent formatting throughout the manuscript, including font, spacing, and alignment.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in English, Creative Writing, Journalism, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in line editing and developmental editing, preferably within the publishing industry.
  • Exceptional command of the English language, with strong grammar and editorial skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet tight deadlines.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Detail-oriented with a passion for storytelling and literature.
  • Familiarity with various writing styles and genres.
  • Proficiency in using editing software and tools (e.g., Microsoft Word, Google Docs, editing software).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with both fiction and non-fiction works.
  • Knowledge of contemporary literary trends and market demands.
  • Good writing and editing skills.
