We are looking for an experienced COBOL Developer with strong exposure to Payments and Core Banking systems to support ongoing modernization and integration programs within our Payments practice. The role involves maintaining, enhancing, and optimizing mainframe-based payment systems while collaborating closely with Java, API, and transformation teams to enable migration toward next-generation payment platforms.
The ideal candi will have hands-on experience developing and supporting COBOL-based payment applications on IBM Mainframe or AS/400 environments , with good understanding of payment processing, clearing, and settlement flows such as SWIFT, ACH, RTGS, and A .
Key responsibilities
- Application Development and Maintenance
- Develop, maintain, and optimize COBOL, JCL, CICS, and DB2 programs used for payment initiation, validation, routing, and settlement.
- Analyze existing batch and online payment modules , identify improvement opportunities, and support re-engineering initiatives.
- Enhance legacy payment processing logic to comply with ISO 2 , SWIFT CBPR+ , or domestic scheme requirements.
- Collaborate with testing teams to support SIT, UAT , and production rollouts, ensuring transaction integrity and minimal downtime.
2. Payments System Modernization
- Work closely with modernization teams to analyze, document, and refactor legacy COBOL components for migration into microservices or API-based architectures.
- Support integration between mainframe systems and new Java / API-based payment hubs , focusing on file processing, message translation, and data exchange.
- Contribute to coexistence strategies , ensuring continuity of batch and real-time payments during phased transformation.
- Participate in impact analysis for system enhancements, version upgrades, and interface redesigns.
3. Technical Support and Governance
- Troubleshoot production incidents related to payment processing, reconciliation, or clearing interface issues .
- Work within structured change management and release frameworks to ensure stable deployments.
- Maintain clear technical documentation including program logic, data mappings, and job control flows .
- Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to ensure compliance with security, audit, and operational standards .
Skills Required:
- 6-12 years of experience in COBOL development within banking or financial services environments.
- Strong hands-on expertise in COBOL, JCL, CICS, VSAM, and DB2 .
- Exposure to payment processing, clearing, and settlement flows , including SWIFT, ACH, RTGS, A, and ISO 2 .
- Experience with file handling, data mapping, and batch scheduling (e.g., Control-M, CA7).
- Familiarity with mainframe-to-API integration adapters , MQ , or file-based interface gateways .
- Understanding of reconciliation, exception handling, and accounting posting logic in payment ecosystems.
- Experience collaborating with Java, API, and DevOps teams for modernization or migration initiatives.
- Good analytical and debugging skills, with a structured approach to root cause identification.
- Excellent communication and documentation skills to interact with global delivery and operations teams.
