Job Description

Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer (CAIO) Mission: Lead the research, development, and continuous advancement of BIG's AI capabilities in generative translation, speech, vision, and decision-support. Transform innovation into intellectual property that drives all BIG product lines. Promote scientific rigor, ethical AI, and rapid experimentation for impactful delivery at startup speed. Reporting Structure: Reports to the Chief Executive Officer with a dotted line to the Board Technology and Ethics Committee. Directly manages the AI Research Lab with about 45 team members. Oversees an 18 million USD R and D budget. Closely collaborates with the Chief Technology Officer for scaled model deployment. Strategic Pillars and Key Outcomes (First 12 Months): 1. Model Innovation and Research: - Release Gen-3 multilingual transformer - Improve BLEU score by 6 points - Cut post-edit effort by 40 percent 2. AI Platform and Toolchain: - Launch distributed training cluster with 2 PFLOPS - Create a feature store - Achieve less than 6-hour model retrain cycles 3. Responsible and Ethical AI: - Complete company-wide AI governance playbook - Ensure 100 percent model compliance with bias and robustness audits 4. Talent and Ecosystem: - Hire 12 PhD researchers - Launch joint labs with two top universities and three strategic vendors 5. Thought Leadership and Intellectual Property: - File 8 new AI patents - Present at ACL, EMNLP, and NeurIPS - Publish annual BIG AI Impact Report Core Responsibilities: - Set AI research agenda for translation, LLMs, speech, and vision - Drive model experimentation and peer review - Manage data acquisition, labeling, and privacy policies - Lead AI Ethics Council and ensure legal compliance with regulations - Develop academic and vendor partnerships - Secure grants and joint research agreements - Promote a culture of open science and learning - Mentor AI-focused staff Authority: - Full authority over AI Research Lab budget and hiring - Final approval on model readiness, architecture, and ethical compliance - Chair of the patent committee for AI innovations Qualifications: - Over 20 years in AI and ML with at least 10 years leading research teams - Proven experience bringing models to production - Expertise in deep learning, generative models, translation, and speech AI - PhD in a relevant field preferred - Publications at major conferences such as ACL, EMNLP, ICML, or NeurIPS - Experience with AI governance and responsible AI programs - Strong executive communication and collaboration skills Why This Role Matters: BIG's leadership in language AI depends on turning research into scalable, responsible innovation.
