Job Overview: As a Blood Bank Technician, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the safe and efficient collection, processing, testing, storage, and distribution of blood and blood products. You will perform a variety of technical and administrative tasks to support the operations of the blood bank and uphold the highest standards of quality and safety in blood transfusion services. Key Responsibilities: Blood Collection and Processing: Perform venipuncture and collect blood donations from voluntary donors or patients. Process blood donations using automated or manual methods to separate whole blood into various components such as red blood cells, plasma, and platelets. Label and store blood components in appropriate conditions to maintain integrity and viability. Blood Testing and Screening: Conduct pre-transfusion compatibility testing to ensure compatibility between donor blood and recipient blood. Perform blood typing, cross-matching, and antibody screening tests using serological and immunohematological techniques. Screen blood donations for infectious diseases such as HIV, hepatitis, syphilis, and other transfusion-transmitted infections. Quality Control and Assurance: Maintain strict adherence to quality control procedures and regulatory requirements governing blood banking operations. Monitor and document temperature, humidity, and other environmental conditions in blood storage areas. Conduct regular quality assurance checks on equipment, reagents, and processes to ensure accuracy and reliability of test results. Inventory Management: Monitor blood inventory levels and replenish supplies as needed to meet demand for blood products. Perform inventory audits, stock rotation, and expiry date monitoring to prevent wastage and ensure product freshness. Maintain accurate records of blood donations, components issued, and inventory transactions using electronic or manual systems. Documentation and Reporting: Prepare and maintain detailed documentation of donor information, test results, and blood product specifications. Generate reports on blood bank activities, including donor demographics, blood utilization statistics, and adverse reactions. Ensure compliance with documentation requirements outlined by regulatory agencies and accrediting bodies. Equipment Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting of blood bank equipment and instrumentation. Coordinate with biomedical engineers or external service providers for equipment repairs, upgrades, and validation. Donor Recruitment and Education: Assist in donor recruitment efforts by providing information about blood donation, eligibility criteria, and benefits of donation. Conduct educational sessions and outreach programs to raise awareness about the importance of blood donation and transfusion safety. Safety and Infection Control: Follow established protocols for infection control, biohazard management, and waste disposal in compliance with regulatory guidelines. Adhere to standard precautions and safety measures to minimize the risk of occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens. Qualifications and Skills: Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Technology, Biomedical Science, or a related field. Certification or licensure as a Medical Laboratory Technologist or Blood Bank Technician preferred. Strong knowledge of blood banking principles, practices, and regulatory requirements. Proficiency in performing blood typing, cross-matching, and serological testing techniques. Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to work under pressure. Effective communication skills and ability to interact professionally with donors, patients, and healthcare professionals. Commitment to upholding ethical standards, confidentiality, and patient safety in blood banking operations. Working Conditions: Blood bank technicians typically work in laboratory settings within hospitals, blood donation centers, or transfusion services. May be required to work rotating shifts, weekends, or holidays to support 24/7 blood banking operations. Exposure to bloodborne pathogens and hazardous chemicals is possible, requiring adherence to safety protocols and use of personal protective equipment.
