About the job: Key responsibilities: 1. Use computer software and mathematical models to design, develop and test new materials, devices and equipment 2. Program electronics, build and evaluate prototypes, troubleshoot problems and rethink the design until it works correctly 3. Liaise with technicians and manufacturers to ensure the feasibility of a product in terms of design and economic viability 4. Conduct research to solve clinical problems using questionnaires, interviews and group conferences 5. Liaise closely with medical professionals such as doctors and therapists as well as with end users 6. Discuss and solve problems with manufacturing, quality, purchasing and marketing departments 7. Assess the potential wider market for products or modifications suggested by health professionals or others 8. Arrange clinical trials of medical products 9. Approach marketing and other industry companies to sell the product 10. Write reports and attend conferences and exhibitions to present your work and latest designs to a range of technical and non-technical audiences 11. Meet with senior health service staff or other managers to exchange findings 12. Deal with technical queries from hospitals and general practitioners and give advice on new equipment 13. Test and maintain clinical equipment 14. Train technical or clinical staff 15. Investigate safety-related incidents 16. Keep up to date with new developments in the field, nationally and internationally 17. Repair, calibrate and maintain medical equipment and instrumentation used in healthcare delivery 18. Inspect and install medical and related technical equipment in medical and research facilities for use by physicians, nurses, scientists or engineers involved in researching, monitoring, diagnosing and treating physical ailments or dysfunctions 19. Repair, calibrate and maintain equipment using hand tools, power tools, measuring devices, knowledge of manufacturers' manuals, troubleshooting techniques and preventive maintenance schedules 20. Safety-test medical equipment and healthcare facility's structural environment to ensure patient and staff safety from electrical or mechanical hazards 21. Consult with medical or research staff to ascertain that equipment functions properly and safely, utilizing knowledge of electronics, medical terminology, human anatomy and physiology, chemistry and physics 22. Demonstrate and explain correct operation of equipment to medical personnel 23. Modify or develop instruments or devices under supervision of medical or engineering staff 24.
