Asstnt Mgr / Sr Engnr_ Fabrication (Ash & Coal Handling Equipment)

Role Overview

The Assistant Manager / Senior Engineer Fabrication will support the Fabrication Head in manufacturing and fabrication of ash handling equipment and coal handling structures, ensuring quality, dimensional accuracy, productivity, and schedule adherence.

This is a hardcore fabrication role, requiring strong hands-on experience in plate work, structural fabrication, welding, fit-up, and shop coordination for power-plant equipment.

Role & responsibilities

1. Fabrication of Ash Handling Equipment

Supervise and execute fabrication of:

• • Bottom ash hoppers
• • Buffer hoppers and surge bins
• • Ash silos (plate-type / RCC interface items)
• • ESP hoppers and chutes
• • Transition pieces, liners, and ducting
• • Pressure / vacuum vessels (where applicable)

Responsibilities include:

• • Plate development, marking, cutting, rolling, and fit-up
• • Control of tolerances, distortion, and welding sequence
• • Ensuring correct orientation of nozzles, flanges, and manholes

2. Fabrication of Coal Handling & Structural Items

Supervise fabrication of:

• • Conveyor galleries and trestle structures
• • Transfer tower structures
• • Platforms, walkways, ladders, handrails
• • Equipment support frames and skids
• • Chutes, liners, and structural housings

Ensure:

• • Correct section orientation and member identification
• • Compliance with approved GA and fabrication drawings
• • Proper trial assembly where required

3. Shop Floor Execution & Control

• • Plan daily and weekly fabrication activities with the Fabrication Head.
• • Allocate work to fitters, welders, and supervisors.
• • Monitor productivity, rework, and material usage.
• • Ensure fabrication aligns with project delivery priorities.

4. Welding, Quality & Inspection

• • Ensure compliance with WPS, PQR, and welding procedures.
• • Control welding quality, heat input, distortion, and weld sequence.
• • Coordinate NDT (RT, UT, MPI, DP) and closure of observations.
• • Support internal QA, client inspections, and third-party inspections (TPI).

5. Material & Drawing Coordination

• • Coordinate with stores for plates, sections, liners, and consumables.
• • Ensure latest approved drawings are used on shop floor.
• • Interface with engineering for clarifications and revisions.
• • Maintain fabrication status reports and look-ahead plans.

6. Packing, Dispatch & Site Interface

• • Ensure proper surface preparation, painting, and marking.
• • Coordinate packing and dispatch sequencing as per site erection plans.
• • Address site feedback on fitment, alignment, or modification issues.

Preferred candidate profile

Qualifications

• • Diploma / BE / B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering

(Hands-on fabrication experience is critical; degree is secondary

Experience

• • 10 to 18 years of experience in heavy fabrication for power-plant equipment
• • Mandatory experience in fabrication of:
• • Ash handling equipment (hoppers, silos, bins)
• • Coal handling structures and equipment supports
• • Experience in EPC / power-plant fabrication shops preferred

Mandatory Hands-On Exposure

Candidates must have personally handled:

• • Plate thicknesses typically 840 mm and above
• • Rolling, forming, and fit-up of large-diameter shells
• • Structural fabrication with IS sections
• • Welding of carbon steel and abrasion-resistant plates
• • Dimensional control for large fabricated assemblies
