Founded in 2005, Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital operates under the Yugrishi Shriram Sharma Acharya Charitable Trust, a registered non-profit dedicated to addressing economic and gender inequalities in low-income regions, especially in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. Our mission is to create a world without blindness and a future where women thrive by restoring sight to those needlessly blind and empowering rural girls through education, skill development, and entrepreneurship. Starting as a humble 10-bed hospital within a temple complex, Akhand Jyoti has grown into the largest eye hospital in Eastern India. Our innovative and holistic approach is built on three key pillars: Sight Restoration, Education and Empowerment of Rural Girls, and Serving Low-Income Geographies. These pillars address the pressing challenges of poverty, blindness, and gender inequality faced by rural populations. With the philosophy of ‘Working Where it Really Matters,’ we operate a vast network of over 40 eye care centres, 5 surgical eye hospitals, and the world’s first Centre of Excellence in eye care in rural India. Currently, we screen over 10,00,000 patients and perform over 93,000 surgeries annually of which 80% is completely free to the underprivileged patients. By 2030, we aim to quadruple our capacity, restoring sight to 2 million people, screening 12 million, and educating and training 1,500 girls.
