5 AXIS OPERATOR

Position Overview

The 5-Axis CNC Operator is responsible for running advanced 5-axis machining centers to produce precision components as per engineering drawings and process sheets.
The role focuses on machine operation, in-process inspection, monitoring multi-axis machining cycles, and maintaining accuracy and quality for complex aerospace, medical, and engineering parts.

The operator works under the guidance of Setters, Programmers, Supervisors, and Shift Incharges to ensure safe and efficient operation of multi-axis CNC machines.

Key Responsibilities

1. Machine Operation

• Operate 5-axis CNC machines based on setup provided by the Setter/Programmer.
• Load workpieces, run machining cycles, and monitor multi-axis movements.
• Maintain cycle times and complete daily production targets.
• Follow operation sheets, programs, and work instructions accurately.

2. In-Process Inspection

• Inspect machined components using:
• Vernier calipers
• Micrometers
• Height gauges
• Bore gauges
• Dial indicators
• Profile gauges
• (Basic) CMM understanding is an added advantage
• Perform first-piece checks and periodic inspection during the machining cycle.
• Report deviations, tool wear, or dimensional issues immediately.

3. Tool & Machine Monitoring

• Monitor tool wear, breakage, coolant levels, and spindle load.
• Assist Setter in tool changes and offset adjustments (no unauthorized changes).
• Ensure proper clamping, fixture cleanliness, and workpiece orientation.
• Maintain proper chip removal and machine cleanliness.

4. Job Handling & Process Discipline

• Follow all machining instructions strictly for complex multi-axis operations.
• Ensure correct part identification, FIFO, and traceability.
• Handle precision components carefully to avoid scratches or damage.
• Follow correct loading/unloading techniques for complex workpieces.

5. Safety & Housekeeping

• Follow all EHS guidelines, PPE requirements, and machine safety protocols.
• Maintain 5S standards: cleaning, organization, tool control, and workplace discipline.
• Report unsafe practices or near-miss incidents immediately.

6. Documentation & Reporting

• Record production output, inspection results, and downtime.
• Maintain job cards, shift logs, and tool usage sheets.
• Provide detailed shift handover notes to the next operator.
• Update ERP/MIS entries when assigned.

Required Qualifications

Education

• ITI (Machinist/Fitter) / Diploma in Mechanical, Production, or equivalent trade.
• Basic CNC operation certification is preferred.

Experience

• 1–4 years of experience operating CNC machines (4-axis/5-axis preferred).
• Experience with aerospace, medical, or complex machining components is an advantage.

Skills

• Basic understanding of 5-axis machine operation.
• Ability to read simple engineering drawings and understand tolerances.
• Skilled in using measuring instruments.
• Good machine awareness and observation ability.
• Strong discipline, willingness to learn, and teamwork.
