Core Machine Operations

• CNC VTL (Vertical Turning Lathe):

  Designed with a vertically oriented spindle, VTLs use gravity to help secure and stabilize large, heavy parts during machining.

• HTL (Horizontal Turning Lathe):

  Best suited for long, slim parts where the workpiece spins horizontally between centers.

• Large Turning Capacity:

  Skilled operators manage 3-4 meter turning tables capable of handling workpieces weighing several tons (e.g., up to 15-80 metric tons).

Technical Skills & Control Systems

• FANUC Control Systems:

  Operators must be proficient in FANUC-based interfaces for programming, setting offsets, and managing automated tool changes.

• Programming (G-Code/M-Code):

  Fundamental knowledge of G-codes and M-codes is required to control machine movements, cutting speeds, and feed rates.

• 2D Drawing Interpretation:

  Precision requires the ability to read and interpret engineering blueprints and 2D technical drawings to ensure parts meet specific tolerances.

Tooling & Machining Processes

• Milling & Turning Tools:

  Modern VTLs often feature "live tooling" or "VTM" (Vertical Turn Mill) capabilities, allowing for concurrent turning, milling, and drilling operations in a single setup.

• Heavy Job Management:

  Experience in "heavy engineering" is essential for handling oversized components like turbine rotors, gear blanks, and valve bodies.

• Tool Management:

  Critical skills include selecting proper cutting tools for specific materials (e.g., steel, titanium) and monitoring tool wear to maintain quality.

Operational Responsibilities

• Machine Setup:

  Adept at installing heavy-duty fixtures, adjusting tool offsets, and aligning massive workpieces.

• Calibration & Quality Control:

  Using specialized measuring instruments (calipers, micrometers) to verify that finished products match the exact specifications from the 2D drawings.

• Safety:

  Adherence to strict safety protocols is mandatory due to the scale and weight of the jobs, including the use of overhead cranes for loading.
