Job Description

VMC operator

Key Responsibilities

  • Machine Operation and Setup:

Operate VMC machines to perform tasks like milling, drilling, and tapping. This includes loading raw materials, selecting and installing appropriate tools and fixtures, and adjusting machine parameters (like offsets, speeds, and feeds).
  • Blueprint Interpretation:

Read and interpret 2D and sometimes 3D engineering drawings, blueprints, and technical specifications to understand project requirements and ensure finished products meet dimensional and tolerance specifications.
  • Programming (as needed):

Depending on the role, operators may be required to load existing programs or make minor modifications. In "operator/programmer" roles, they develop, edit, and optimize CNC programs using G-code and M-code, often with CAM software.
  • Quality Control:

Monitor machine operations to detect malfunctions and perform in-process inspections using precision measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, and gauges to verify part conformity to specifications.
  • Maintenance and Troubleshooting:

Conduct routine maintenance, such as cleaning and lubricating the machine, and troubleshoot minor mechanical or programming issues that arise during production.
  • Safety and Documentation:

Adhere to all safety protocols and maintain a clean and organized work area. Document production data, quality logs, and machine performance records.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Education:

A high school diploma or equivalent is typical, with vocational training, an ITI, or a diploma in mechanical engineering often preferred.
  • Experience:

Proven experience as a VMC or CNC operator is usually required, with a minimum of 4-5 years of hands-on experience.
  • Technical Skills:

    • Proficiency in operating VMC machines.
    • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.
    • Knowledge of CNC programming, G-code, and M-code (especially for setter/programmer roles).
    • Experience using precision measuring instruments.
    • Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
  • Soft Skills:

Attention to detail, commitment to quality, ability to work independently or as part of a team, and strong communication skills are essential.
