Staff Engineer - Backend Engineering

As a Staff Engineer in the Backend Engineering team of Digital Business at Sony Pictures Networks in Bangalore, you will play a crucial role in driving the architecture, design, and development of scalable backend systems that power SonyLIV's digital experiences. Your responsibilities include acting as a technical leader and mentor within the engineering team to ensure high performance, reliability, and innovation across services and platforms. To excel in this role, you should have a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field. You should be proficient in working with scalable backend systems, cloud platforms, and modern backend stacks such as Node.js, No/SQL, REDIS, and Kafka. This is a hands-on role that involves 70% or more direct coding. You will collaborate with internal stakeholders like Frontend Engineering, DevOps, QA, Product Management, Data Engineering, and Security, as well as external partners like tech vendors, third-party APIs/integrations, and CDN partners. Reporting to the AVP/Sr. EM of Backend Engineering, Digital Business, you will lead the design and development of scalable backend services for SonyLIV's core OTT platform. Architecting microservices with a focus on modularity, performance, and fault tolerance will be a key aspect of your role. You will also mentor junior engineers, conduct design/code reviews, and promote best practices. Collaborating with cross-functional teams to define, build, and release product features is essential. Your expertise in scalable backend architecture, RESTful API design, RDBMS/NoSQL databases, message queues, event-driven systems, cloud-native infrastructure, containerization, caching strategies, security principles, and system design will be critical in ensuring service uptime, latency, and performance through effective observability and monitoring. You will also contribute to technical strategy and long-term architectural decisions while driving automation, CI/CD, and deployment excellence.
