Senior Resident Anesthesia

Role Objective:

To provide specialized anaesthesia and critical care support to liver transplant patients in the ICU and perioperative areas. The role involves managing critically ill patients before, during, and after liver transplantation, ensuring optimal perioperative care, and supporting the overall transplant program.

Key Responsibilities:

Perioperative Anaesthesia Support:

• Conduct pre-operative anaesthesia assessments for liver transplant patients.
• Administer anaesthesia during liver transplant surgeries and manage intraoperative critical events.
• Monitor fluid balance, hemodynamic parameters, and coagulation status during surgery.

Post-Operative Critical Care Management (LT ICU):

• Manage liver transplant recipients in the ICU immediately post-transplant.
• Oversee ventilator support, hemodynamic monitoring, and use of vasoactive medications.
• Monitor graft function, coagulation parameters, and metabolic status.
• Manage sepsis, bleeding, immunosuppressive therapy, and multi-organ support.
• Ensure early detection and management of post-transplant complications.

Coordination & Teamwork:

• Work closely with liver transplant surgeons, hepatologists, nephrologists, and nursing teams.
• Participate in transplant selection meetings, patient planning discussions, and multidisciplinary rounds.

Emergency Response:

• Attend Code Blue calls and manage perioperative and post-operative emergencies.
• Handle acute deterioration in pre-transplant ICU patients awaiting liver transplant.

Documentation & Protocols:

• Maintain accurate ICU records, anaesthesia charts, and critical care documentation.
• Follow standard transplant ICU protocols, infection control guidelines, and transplant-specific care pathways.

Training & Research:

• Train residents, fellows, and ICU nursing staff in transplant-related critical care and anaesthesia.
• Participate in clinical research, audits, and continuous medical education (CME) activities.

Desired Candidate Profile:

• Education:

  MD / DNB Anaesthesia / Fellowship in Liver Transplant Anaesthesia & Critical Care (preferred) IDCCM / IFCCM (preferred for critical care component)

• Experience:

  25 years of experience in anaesthesia and critical care, with at least 12 years in liver transplant or transplant ICU preferred.

• Skills Required:

• Expertise in managing complex liver transplant cases.
• In-depth knowledge of coagulation management, hemodynamic monitoring, and immunosuppression.
• Proficiency in advanced critical care procedures (CVP, A-line, PA catheter, CRRT management, etc.).
• Team collaboration with surgeons and hepatologists.
• Strong communication and family counseling skills.
