Job Description

Job Role: Lead/Principal Search Engineer (Hands-on)

Duration: Long-term

Client: Large eCommerce Retailer

Work Mode: Remote

Experience: 12-15 years

Key skills: Java, Microservices, Elasticsearch / Solr

Responsibilities:

Lead/Principal Search Engineer for a large eCommerce retailer. Own technical strategy and hands-on delivery of scalable, low-latency search services. Champion Agile, relevancy tuning, and TDD to deliver robust, maintainable, high-performance search experiences.

What youll do

Design and develop search services using Java and microservices
Architect, deploy, and optimize Elasticsearch/Solr clusters for scale, relevance, and resilience
Build indexing pipelines; define schemas, analyzers, and query parsers
Drive relevancy: synonyms, boosting, ranking signals, A/B tests, CTR optimization
Deliver high-availability, low-latency APIs with strong security and observability
Troubleshoot production issues; lead root-cause analysis and remediation
Collaborate with product, data science, and platform teams on features/roadmaps
Create designs, estimates, documentation; mentor engineers and enforce best practices
Evaluate emerging search technologies to improve quality and productivity

Preferred Qualifications:

Strong relevancy tuning: analyzers, tokenizers, stemming, synonyms, BM25/DFR, boosting, learning-to-rank
Indexing pipelines, near-real-time ingestion, CDC, and data modeling for search
Observability and performance tuning (logging, metrics, tracing)
Plus: Kafka/Spark/Flink for streaming/data pipelines
Security for search platforms (AuthN/Z, TLS, RBAC)
CI/CD, Docker, Kubernetes, and infrastructure as code
Cloud (AWS/Azure/GCP); managed search services preferred
Excellent communication, leadership, mentoring; effective remote collaboration across time zones
