Job Description

Position Summary

The School Counselor supports students’ emotional, social, academic, and behavioural well-being. The counselor works closely with students, teachers, and parents to promote a safe, supportive, and positive school environment. The role ensures early identification of concerns, timely intervention, and effective guidance aligned with CBSE norms.

Key Responsibilities1. Student Counseling & Guidance

  • Provide individual and group counseling to support students with emotional, social, behavioural, or academic concerns.
  • Assist students in developing confidence, coping skills, interpersonal relationships, and positive behaviour.
  • Offer age-appropriate sessions on mental health awareness, personal safety, self-control, and conflict resolution.

2. Screening & Early Identification

  • Identify students with learning difficulties, adjustment issues, anxiety, bullying concerns, or other developmental challenges.
  • Maintain confidential records and data for referred students.
  • Work with class teachers and coordinators to observe student behaviour and suggest interventions.

3. Academic & Career Support

  • Guide students on study habits, goal setting, time management, and general academic skills.
  • Provide basic career awareness sessions for upper grades (if applicable).
  • Support students who show declining academic performance through counselling and motivation strategies.

4. Crisis Intervention

  • Provide immediate support to students in cases of emotional distress, conflict, or crisis situations.
  • Handle sensitive issues such as bullying, peer pressure, anger, grief, or trauma with confidentiality and empathy.
  • Escalate concerns to the principal/management when required.

5. Parent Engagement

  • Conduct counseling sessions for parents when necessary.
  • Guide parents on child behavior, developmental issues, and strategies for home reinforcement.
  • Support teachers and parents in understanding student needs and behaviour patterns.

6. Teacher Collaboration

  • Provide guidance to teachers on managing student behaviour and classroom challenges.
  • Conduct workshops for teachers on topics such as adolescent behaviour, empathy, inclusiveness, and classroom management strategies.
  • Participate in staff meetings and contribute to child-centric planning.

7. Awareness & Well-being Programs

  • Plan and execute workshops, life-skill sessions, and awareness programs on:
  • Mental health
  • Personal hygiene
  • Digital safety
  • Bullying prevention
  • Emotional intelligence
  • Values and life skills
  • Facilitate age-appropriate sessions across different grade levels.

8. Documentation & Compliance

  • Maintain proper documentation of counseling sessions while ensuring confidentiality.
  • Prepare monthly reports for the principal/HR on cases handled and interventions.
  • Ensure compliance with CBSE requirements for school counseling services and POCSO guidelines.
  • Maintain student referral forms, progress reports, and follow-up documentation.

9. Student Welfare Committees

  • Support committees such as:
  • School Safety Committee
  • Child Protection Committee
  • Anti-Bullying Committee
  • Special Education Support (if applicable)
  • Assist in creating a safe, positive, and inclusive school climate.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Master’s degree in Psychology / Counseling Psychology / Child Psychology.
  • Minimum 2–3 years of experience working with children or in school counseling (preferred).
  • Training in child protection, behavioural management, or special needs is an added advantage.
  • Excellent communication skills, empathy, and strong ethical values.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
