Job Summary:

The Safety Officer on a construction site is responsible for overseeing all safety operations, ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations, and promoting a culture of safety. The role involves conducting risk assessments, implementing safety measures, and ensuring that all site workers and visitors operate in a safe and hazard-free environment.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Site Safety Management

• Monitor day-to-day construction site activities for compliance with health and safety regulations.
  
• Enforce site safety rules and standards at all times.
  
• Conduct regular safety patrols, inspections, and audits on-site.
  

2. Risk Assessment & Hazard Control

• Identify potential hazards before and during site operations.
  
• Conduct and document risk assessments and implement appropriate control measures.
  
• Ensure control measures are understood and followed by all personnel.
  

3. Training & Awareness

• Conduct site-specific safety inductions for all new workers.
  
• Provide toolbox talks and refresher safety training sessions regularly.
  
• Raise awareness about high-risk activities like working at heights, scaffolding, electrical work, excavation, and lifting operations.
  

4. Incident Management

• Report and investigate accidents, injuries, or near misses.
  
• Maintain records of incidents, including root cause analysis and corrective actions taken.
  
• Liaise with emergency services if required.
  

5. PPE and Equipment Safety

• Ensure all personnel are using the correct Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  
• Check that equipment, tools, and machinery are used safely and maintained properly.
  
• Ensure lifting gear and scaffolding are certified and inspected.
  

6. Documentation & Compliance

• Maintain up-to-date safety records including inspection reports, permits to work, risk assessments, and method statements.
  
• Ensure compliance with local labor laws, occupational health and safety standards (e.g., OSHA, NEBOSH), and company policies.
  
• Assist with the development and review of the sites Health & Safety Plan.
  

7. Emergency Preparedness

• Develop and enforce emergency procedures (e.g., fire, medical, evacuation).
  
• Conduct drills and review emergency response effectiveness.
  
• Ensure first aid facilities and trained responders are available on site.
  

Qualifications & Skills:

Educational & Certification Requirements:

• Diploma or degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Civil Engineering, or related field.
  
• Certification in safety management (e.g., NEBOSH, IOSH, OSHA, Fire Safety, First Aid).
  
• Construction Safety Supervisor or Safety Officer training (as per local regulations).
  

Experience:

• 2–5 years’ experience in a similar role within the construction industry.
  
• Proven understanding of construction operations, materials handling, working at heights, scaffolding safety, confined spaces, etc.
  

Core Skills:

• Strong knowledge of construction safety regulations and procedures.
  
• Excellent communication and leadership skills.
  
• Ability to handle stressful situations and make decisions quickly.
  
• Detail-oriented with strong documentation skills.
  
• Proficient in MS Office and safety management systems.
  

Working Conditions:

• Location: On-site at active construction sites (may vary by project).
  
• Working hours: Full-time; may include overtime, weekends, or shift work depending on project needs.
  
• Environment: Outdoor, physically demanding, requires safety gear at all times.
  

Reporting Line:

• Reports to: Site Manager / Project Manager / HSE Manager
