Quality Engineer (Stainless Steel Fabrication)

1. Job Purpose

SS 304/304L pipe spool fabrication

2. Key Responsibilities

A. Incoming Material & Documentation QC

• Inspect and verify incoming SS 304/304L pipes, fittings, and consumables as per MTC and project specifications.
• Ensure proper material identification, heat number mapping, and traceability.
• Check dimensional accuracy, visual condition, and certification of materials.

B. In-Process Quality Control

• Conduct fit-up inspections for pipes, elbows, tees, reducers, and stub-ends.
• Verify alignment, root gaps, orientation, branch connections, and welding preparations.
• Monitor welding activities for compliance with approved

  WPS / PQR / Welder Qualification

• Conduct Visual Testing (VT) for root pass, hot pass, and final weld beads.
• Ensure purge requirements are followed for SS 304 GTAW welding.
• Verify pickling and passivation procedures after welding and grinding.
• Coordinate NDT activities (RT, PT, UT, MT) as per ITP and client requirements.

C. Final QC & Spool Release

• Inspect finished spools for dimensional accuracy as per isometrics and spool drawings.
• Verify weld numbering, heat number mapping, and spool traceability.
• Prepare final QC reports, weld logs, NDT summaries, and spool release notes.
• Coordinate with client/third-party inspectors for final inspection and approval.
• Ensure spool cleanliness, proper end protection, and rust-free condition.

D. Dispatch QC Responsibilities

• Conduct final dimensional check before dispatch.
• Ensure spool marking, tagging, and identification as per packing list.
• Verify painting (if applicable), pickling/passivation status, and spool protection.
• Inspect packaging, handling, and loading to avoid transit damage.
• Prepare and verify dispatch documentation:
• Spool release reports
• Weld summary
• MTCs
• QC dossiers
• Packing list
• Coordinate with dispatch/logistics for proper sequencing as per installation requirement.

E. QA Documentation Responsibilities

• Maintain welding records, welder performance records, and consumable control logs.
• Prepare and maintain:
• ITPs
• WPS/PQR documents
• NCR & corrective action reports
• NDT reports
• Dossiers & final handover documentation
• Update spool status sheets and QC progress trackers.
• Ensure compliance with

  ASME B31.3, ASME Sec IX, ASTM standards

  , and project specifications.

F. Safety & Compliance

• Enforce safety practices during welding, grinding, handling, and pickling operations.
• Conduct toolbox talks with production & QC teams.
• Ensure proper storage and handling of stainless-steel materials and chemicals.

3. Required Skills & Competencies

• Strong knowledge of SS 304/304L spool fabrication and welding processes.
• Good understanding of WPS, PQR, NDT methods, and ASME/ASTM codes.
• Ability to read isometrics, weld maps, GA drawings, and P&IDs.
• Strong inspection, documentation, and reporting skills.
• Knowledge of dimensional tolerances, spool fit-up techniques, and purge systems.
• Good communication and coordination skills.
• Proficiency in MS Office (Excel/Word) .

4. Qualifications

• Diploma / BE / B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
• 2–3 years’ experience in SS 304/304L pipe spool QC, fabrication, welding QA/QC, or dispatch QC.
• NDT Level II certification (RT/PT/UT/MT) preferred.

5. Added Advantages

• Experience in modular/skid fabrication or process piping.
• Knowledge of hydrotesting and pneumatic testing.
• Understanding of ASME Section IX welding requirements.
