Phlebotomist

Role & responsibilities

The Phlebotomist is responsible for safe, accurate, and timely collection of blood and other specimens from patients while ensuring patient comfort, infection control, and compliance with laboratory and NABH standards.

Preferred candidate profile

Sample Collection & Patient Care

• Collect blood samples using

  venipuncture, capillary puncture, and arterial sampling

  (if trained).
• Identify patients correctly using

  two identifiers

  before sample collection.
• Explain procedures to patients and ensure patient comfort and cooperation.
  
• Handle pediatric, geriatric, antenatal, and difficult vein patients safely.
  
• Respond promptly to OPD, IPD, emergency, and ICU sample requests.
  

Specimen Handling & Processing

• Label specimens accurately with patient details, date, and time of collection.
  
• Ensure correct

  vacutainer usage, sample volume, and order of draw

• Transport samples to the laboratory maintaining required temperature and time.
  
• Follow rejection criteria and report improperly collected samples.
  

Infection Control & Safety

• Adhere to

  standard precautions and infection control policies

  .
• Ensure proper use of PPE and hand hygiene.
  
• Follow

  biomedical waste segregation and needle-stick injury protocols

  .
• Report incidents, spills, and exposure as per hospital policy.
  

Documentation & Records

• Maintain phlebotomy registers and daily workload logs.
  
• Update patient details and sample status in

  LIS / HIS systems

  .
• Ensure consent documentation when required.
  
• Maintain confidentiality of patient information.
  

Quality & NABH Compliance

• Follow

  NABH and laboratory quality standards

  .
• Participate in internal audits, training, and competency assessments.
  
• Support CAPA activities related to sample collection errors.
  

Equipment & Inventory Management

• Maintain phlebotomy equipment (vacutainers, tourniquets, needles).
  
• Check expiry dates and stock levels of consumables.
  
• Report equipment issues and shortages to Lab In-Charge.
