Job Description

The Forestry Nursery In-Charge will be responsible for developing, managing, and maintaining forest nurseries and guiding villagers in sustainable nursery practices. The role focuses on ensuring healthy seedling production, community training, and promoting sustainable forestry practices that support livelihoods and ecological restoration.

Key Responsibilities:

Nursery Development and Management

  • Plan, establish, and manage forest nurseries for the production of quality seedlings.
  • Select suitable species (forest, fruit, fodder, and medicinal plants) based on local conditions.
  • Prepare nursery layout, beds, potting areas, shade structures, and irrigation systems.
  • Ensure proper soil preparation, seed treatment, sowing, pricking, and transplanting.
  • Maintain nursery records including seed source, sowing dates, survival rates, and distribution.

Plant Care and Maintenance

  • Perform regular watering, weeding, shading, mulching, and nutrient management.
  • Monitor plant health and implement measures to control pests, diseases, and weeds.
  • Ensure quality standards for seedlings, including healthy roots, strong stems, and proper height.
  • Harden plants appropriately before field planting.

Community Training and Guidance

  • Train villagers and community members on nursery techniques and plant care.
  • Demonstrate best practices for seed collection, sowing, potting, and maintenance.
  • Guide villagers in establishing home and community nurseries and plantation activities.
  • Encourage participation of women and youth groups in forestry initiatives.

Coordination and Reporting

  • Coordinate with Forest Department, NGOs, Panchayats, and local institutions.
  • Supervise nursery workers and village volunteers.
  • Prepare periodic progress reports on nursery development and seedling survival.
  • Assist in the distribution of seedlings for plantation programs.

Qualifications:

  • Diploma or degree in Forestry, Agriculture, Horticulture, or a related field.
  • Practical experience in nursery management and plant propagation.
  • Knowledge of local tree species, climatic conditions, and sustainable forestry practices.
