A Medical Coding Analyst is responsible for reviewing and analyzing medical records to assign accurate medical codes such as ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS codes for diagnoses, procedures, and treatments. This role ensures coding accuracy that complies with regulatory guidelines, optimizes reimbursement, and supports healthcare documentation integrity. They also audit clinical documentation, resolve coding discrepancies, train staff, and provide expert coding support to healthcare providers. Key responsibilities include: Coding and abstracting patient encounters for diagnostic and procedural data, including complications and reportable elements. Conducting audits on coded data and clinical documentation to verify correctness for billing and compliance. Researching and applying updates to coding standards such as AMA, AHA, and CMS guidelines. Collaborating with clinical documentation specialists to ensure clear, complete medical records. Monitoring coding compliance with HIPAA and internal policies. Providing training and mentoring to coding staff. Handling special projects related to coding processes.
