Lab technician

Educational Qualification:

• Diploma / B.Sc / B.Tech in Textile Technology / Chemistry / Applied Sciences
• Additional certifications in textile testing, dyeing, or SAP system is a plus

Micro-level Competency Profile:1. Technical Knowledge & Testing Procedures

• Familiarity with textile lab testing standards – AATCC, ISO, ASTM
• Understanding of fibre, yarn, fabric physical properties and test methods (e.g., GSM, tensile strength, shrinkage, pilling, abrasion)
• Colour fastness testing: washing, rubbing, perspiration, light, sublimation
• Handling and calibration of lab instruments – GSM cutter, crock meter, perspiration tester, washing fastness tester, tensile tester, etc.
• Spectrophotometer operation and interpretation (Datacolor / GretagMacbeth or equivalent)
• Colour matching principles, CMC tolerances, DE calculation
• Knowledge of water, effluent testing parameters (TDS, pH, COD, BOD) preferable for ZDHC compliance

2. SAP & Digital Proficiency

• Basic data entry and reporting in SAP PP/QM module – test result input, lot release, inventory mapping
• Excel-based test data reporting, lab dip tracking, and documentation
• Familiarity with laboratory management systems (LIMS) is a bonus
• Email communication for inter-department coordination and buyer reports

3. Sustainability & Compliance Understanding

• Basic awareness of sustainable certifications: GOTS, GRS, OCS, OEKO-TEX, FAIRTRADE, BCI
• Understanding of restricted substances and ZDHC MRSL/RSL compliance
• Experience (or ability to learn) documentation required during external audits for sustainable certifications
• Knowledge of traceability documentation and input-output reconciliation (preferred)

4. 5S and IMS (Integrated Management System) Adherence

• Daily practice of 5S: Sort, Set in order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain
• Following documented procedures under ISO 9001, 14001, 45001
• Participation in internal audits, checklist maintenance, and non-conformance reporting
• Housekeeping and safety practices in lab environment

5. Process Awareness – Textile Wet Processing

• Basic knowledge of fabric processing stages – pre-treatment, dyeing, finishing
• Understanding of process parameters affecting fabric physical and colour properties
• Coordination with dye house and finishing team for lab dip vs bulk matching
• Recording and comparing bulk vs lab performance parameters

6. Soft Skills & Behavioural Competencies

• High attention to detail and accuracy in test result recording
• Strong sense of responsibility and quality ownership
• Good communication skills in Tamil and basic English
• Willingness to learn, take feedback, and adapt to lab SOPs
• Team player with punctuality and discipline as per factory standards

7. Fresh Candidates Should Display:

• Eagerness to learn lab equipment and testing methods
• Commitment to follow SOPs, safety rules, and 5S practices
• Basic understanding of textile processes (can be trained on site)
• Readiness to work in rotational shifts or weekends if required
• Openness to participate in sustainability audits and internal evaluations

8. Experienced Candidates Should Demonstrate:

• Hands-on experience in conducting lab tests independently
• Ability to handle buyer communication or third-party testing coordination
• Familiarity with audit protocols and sustainable standard documentation
• Capability to train junior technicians or interns
• Root cause analysis skills for colour/physical test failures
