Interpreter

An interpreter's job is to facilitate communication between people who speak different languages by accurately and quickly conveying spoken or signed messages from one language to another. Key duties include listening, understanding, and reproducing statements while maintaining the original tone and context. They are essential in various sectors like legal, medical, and business and require fluency in at least two languages, along with strong communication and cultural sensitivity skills. Core responsibilities

• Translate spoken or signed language: Accurately and quickly convert messages from a source language to a target language.
• Convey cultural nuances: Ensure the meaning, tone, and feeling of the original message are communicated effectively.
• Listen and understand: Pay close attention to, understand, and memorize content before reproducing it.
• Maintain impartiality and confidentiality: Stay neutral and professional, especially when dealing with sensitive information.
• Create terminology databases: Compile and organize technical terms and phrases for future reference.
• Work in various settings: Interpret in person, over the phone, or online in diverse environments like conferences, medical appointments, legal proceedings, and community events.

Required skills and qualifications

• Fluency: Be fluent in Tamil, Hindi, Bengali and English.
• Communication: Possess strong listening and verbal communication skills.
• Cultural competence: Have a deep understanding of cultural nuances to accurately convey context.
• Professionalism: Demonstrate a high degree of professionalism and ethical conduct.
• Concentration: Be able to concentrate for extended periods.
• Education: A bachelor's degree can be helpful, but is not always required; however, specific professional certifications are often beneficial.
