Role Summary

An Oncology Staff Nurse is responsible for providing safe, compassionate, and efficient nursing care to patients undergoing cancer treatment. The nurse ensures proper administration of chemotherapy, supportive therapies, and other oncology-specific procedures while maintaining the highest standards of patient safety, comfort, and confidentiality.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

A) Patient Care

• Administer chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy as per protocols.
  
• Monitor patients before, during, and after procedures/treatments for adverse reactions and provide appropriate interventions.
  
• Educate patients and families on treatment plans, side effects, and post-treatment care.
  
• Assist doctors during consultations, procedures, and emergencies.
  
• Ensure adherence to infection control and patient safety guidelines at all times.
  

B) Clinical and Technical Responsibilities

• Prepare and maintain infusion sets, IV lines, and medical equipment needed for chemotherapy and other procedures.
  
• Perform accurate nursing assessments and maintain timely documentation of patient vitals and clinical status.
  
• Handle and dispose of chemotherapy drugs safely as per protocols.
  
• Ensure proper storage and usage of oncology medications and consumables.
  

C) Patient Experience

• Provide empathetic and compassionate care to patients and their families.
  
• Communicate effectively and professionally, addressing patient concerns promptly.
  
• Support patients emotionally during their treatment journey, ensuring dignity and respect.
  

D) Documentation and Compliance

• Maintain complete and accurate nursing records in patient files and electronic systems.
  
• Adhere to NABH, HIPAA, and hospital standards in all nursing practices.
  
• Ensure reporting of any adverse events, incidents, or near misses immediately to the consultant/manager.
  

E) Miscellaneous

• Participate in nursing audits, training sessions, and quality improvement initiatives.
  
• Maintain nursing supplies, check equipment functionality, and report maintenance needs.
  
• Ensure strict compliance with safety and ethical standards in oncology care.
  

Qualifications and Skills

• GNM / B.Sc. Nursing / M.Sc. Nursing (with valid Nursing Registration).
  
• Minimum 2 years of experience in oncology/chemotherapy daycare setup (preferred).
  
• Strong knowledge of oncology nursing protocols and chemotherapy handling.
  
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  
• Compassionate, patient-centric, and detail-oriented.
  
• Ability to work effectively in a team and handle emergency situations calmly.
