GM/ DGM- Product Development (Battery Energy Storage System)

The Incumbent will be responsible for-

Job Purpose

containerized Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)

Role

Product Architecture & System Design-

1. Lead end-to-end development of a containerized BESS solution, focusing on modular and scalable DC block architecture.

2. Define and own the system architecture, including the selection and integration of battery cells, modules, racks, and the overarching Battery Management System (BMS).

Develop multi-level BMS strategy (cell, module, rack, and container level), ensuring safe, reliable, and intelligent energy storage operations.

Subsystem Design and Integration-

1. Drive the design and integration of critical subsystems, including:

2. Thermal management systems (active/passive cooling strategies, HVAC)

3. Fire detection and suppression systems (aligned with UL and NFPA standards)

4. Protection and safety mechanisms for DC systems

5. Electrical control systems and interface definition with PCS (Power Conversion System)

Collaborate with control and automation teams for seamless integration with EMS, SCADA, and other grid interface systems.

Standards, Certification & Compliance-

1. Ensure the product meets all relevant national and international certifications, including but not limited to: UL 9540 / UL 9540A, IEC 62933, NFPA 855, CEA/BIS standards for Indian market compliance.

Lead coordination with testing and certification agencies during FAT (Factory Acceptance Test), SAT (Site Acceptance Test), and type certification processes.

Vendor & Sourcing Ecosystem-

1. Identify, evaluate, and onboard technology and component vendors for critical parts, including: Battery cells and modules, HVAC systems, Fire detection and suppression equipment, Racks, enclosures, and control systems

Develop and execute vendor qualification protocols in alignment with quality, cost, and localization goals.

Manufacturing Interface & Localization-

1. Work closely with manufacturing and industrial engineering teams to ensure designs are optimized for manufacturability and scalability.

2. Drive localization strategy to ensure sourcing of key components aligns with cost, regulatory, and supply chain objectives.

Support production setup, tooling, and first-article inspections for new designs.

Leadership & Strategic Contribution-

1. Act as the technical owner for the BESS product platform and contribute to the broader energy storage roadmap.

2. Work with the CTO to define the long-term product roadmap, GTM (go-to-market) strategy, and technology partnerships.

3. Mentor and lead a multidisciplinary engineering team spanning battery, mechanical, thermal, controls, and compliance functions.

Represent the company at technical forums, regulatory meetings, and with key customers or partners as needed.

Skills & Capabilities

• Exposure to lithium-ion cell chemistry evaluation and performance benchmarking.
• Experience in containerized energy systems for C&I or utility-scale applications.
• Working knowledge of power electronics and communication protocols (Modbus, CAN, etc.).
• Background in industrial safety, root cause analysis, and risk assessment methodologies (FMEA, HAZOP, etc.).
• Strong understanding of energy storage technologies and system integration.
• Experience leading cross-functional product development programs.
• Proven track record of building vendor ecosystems and managing technology partnerships.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with ambiguity and evolving requirements.
• Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and team leadership skills.
