Job Description

Primary Roles of a Freight Broker:

  1. Intermediary Between Shippers and Carriers

    • Matches freight (cargo) from shippers with available carriers (trucking companies).

    • Facilitates communication between both parties to ensure smooth operations.

  2. Negotiation

    • Negotiates rates with both shippers and carriers to secure competitive pricing.

    • Ensures that the agreed price is profitable while maintaining service quality.

  3. Logistics Coordination

    • Coordinates pick-up and delivery schedules.

    • Manages load documentation, routing, and delivery timelines.

  4. Compliance & Documentation

    • Ensures all transportation regulations and legal requirements are met.

    • Prepares and manages required documents such as:

      • Bill of Lading (BOL)

      • Load confirmation

      • Carrier agreements

  5. Tracking & Communication

    • Monitors shipments in transit.

    • Provides real-time updates to shippers regarding freight status.

    • Resolves any issues or delays during transport.

  6. Carrier Vetting

    • Verifies carriers' credentials (licenses, insurance, safety records).

    • Maintains a database of reliable and compliant carriers.

  7. Customer Relationship Management

    • Builds and maintains relationships with both shippers and carriers.

    • Ensures customer satisfaction through reliable service delivery.

  8. Problem Resolution

    • Handles disputes, damages, delays, or claims.

    • Acts as a mediator in case of issues between shippers and carriers.

  9. Billing and Payment Coordination

    • Issues invoices to shippers and processes payments to carriers.

    • Ensures timely financial transactions and maintains financial records.

  10. Market Analysis

  • Stays updated on freight market trends, fuel prices, and demand-supply fluctuations.

  • Uses this data to make informed rate and routing decisions.


Skills Needed:

  • Strong negotiation and communication skills

  • Understanding of logistics, supply chain, and transportation

  • Knowledge of regulatory compliance (FMCSA, DOT, etc.)

  • Problem-solving and crisis management

  • Tech-savviness (using TMS Transportation Management Systems)
