Job Description

The Duty Medical Officer (DMO) will be responsible for providing continuous medical coverage and support for patients admitted under Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and General Medical wards. The DMO will assist consultants in clinical care, monitor patient progress, initiate emergency management, and ensure accurate documentation. Key Responsibilities: 1. Clinical Care & Monitoring Provide round-the-clock care and monitoring for inpatients in Gastro, Hepatology, and Ward settings. Attend ward rounds with the consultant and carry out prescribed treatment and procedures. Monitor patient vitals, progress, and alert the consultant on significant changes. 2. Emergency Management Respond to medical emergencies promptly. Initiate life-saving interventions (e.g., BLS/ACLS protocols) and escalate as necessary. Manage complications like GI bleeding, hepatic encephalopathy, ascitic tap needs, etc., until the consultant arrives. 3. Coordination & Communication Coordinate with nursing staff, lab, radiology, and other departments for timely investigations and interventions. Communicate with patients’ families regarding updates, consents, and progress as per institutional protocol. 4. Documentation & Compliance Ensure timely and accurate documentation in patient case sheets, treatment charts, and electronic health records (EHR). Ensure all medico-legal and consent-related documentation is properly completed. 5. Supportive Procedures (as per competency and training) Assist in or perform basic diagnostic and therapeutic procedures under supervision, such as: NG tube insertion Ascitic tap IV line management ABG sampling Pre-endoscopy preparation and post-procedure observation 6. Administrative Duties Maintain shift handover reports. Ensure adherence to infection control, hospital policies, and quality protocols. Participate in audits, CMEs, and departmental meetings.
