OVERVIEW OF THE ROLE

We are looking for a Senior Engineering Manager to join the Data and Platforms team

Working for the Director of Data youll be leading Data Platform Enablement .

In addition to running the engineering squad the roles will be responsible for ensuring that data engineering is represented in the Product Development Lifecycle and enabling software product teams to operate on the platform adhering to standards, policies and patterns to be defined.

In this role, you will be responsible for hiring, performance appraisal, and rewarding your team, focusing on helping them define their career paths and achieve their short and long-term goals. Using lean and agile methodologies, you will oversee the pace, scale, and performance of your teams delivery in a multi-team, multi-location environment.

This role follows a hybrid approach to working, allowing you to combine working from home with working in our modern offices. These discussions are between you and your manager to find the best pattern for you both! We will kit you out to work from home but know that working as a team is what makes us great and spending quality time together is essential for keeping us mission aligned.

KEY RESPONSIBILITES

Leadership & People:

  • Ability to influence senior stakeholders .
  • Ability to manage other engineering managers.
  • Nature a culture of high-quality, results-oriented delivery with accountability.
  • Ensure all team members have a clear understanding of priorities and expectations by facilitating regular communication and alignment, and by holding planning sessions at the right time and regular retrospectives to maintain focus and efficiency.
  • Coach team members through regular 1:1s, set and review objectives, appraise performance, and assist with career development, ensuring effective performance management.
  • Proactively identify and lead on initiatives to improve the experience of being an engineer in GTT; whether that is to do with productivity, diversity and inclusion, technical competence or other areas.
  • To allow the tribe to grow, work with Talent Teams and other leaders to recruit the best people for your squad.

Data Engineering:

  • Lead the design and implementation of scalable and reliable data infrastructure and pipelines that support business objectives, including greenfield projects.
  • Ensure alignment with cloud-first, scalable technologies, leveraging Databricks,

  • AWS, and other modern data platforms.
  • Ensure data integrity, availability, and security through best practices in data engineering.
  • Collaborate with data scientists, analysts, and other stakeholders to understand data requirements and deliver solutions that meet these needs.
  • Drive innovation in data processing, storage, and retrieval technologies to enhance data accessibility and usability.
  • Implement and maintain data solutions in greenfield environments, bringing fresh ideas and approaches to new projects.
  • Write, oversee and coordinate with team members and subject experts to ensure the maintenance of accurate and effective documentation.

Delivery:

  • Bring value to stakeholders by working closely with Product and Delivery to determine the best strategy to deliver the roadmap.
  • Balance the commercial needs of the business against the ideal technical design, proposing strategic and pragmatic implementations with clear delivery plans, including accurate and realistic estimation of time, to ensure successful execution.
  • Regularly communicate the status of delivery to stakeholders, clearly highlighting any risks and potential impacts, and proactively develop mitigation strategies to ensure successful outcomes.
  • Ensure quality is a first-class citizen in the engineering process and work closely with the QA capability within the squad and wider team to meet the quality demands of the business.
  • Measure and review delivery velocity, quality, lead and cycle-times regularly, and promptly address any issues that arise.
  • Support changes in the business, including adjustments to roadmap priorities and squad configurations, ensuring seamless transitions and continued alignment with overall business objectives.
  • Proactively conduct research on emerging technologies and help introduce these where appropriate.

Ownership:

  • Take responsibility for the solution and remove obstacles for the team.
  • Work with your squad to develop and implement real-time monitoring, good alert design and first-rate logging strategies to easily check health and availability of services.
  • Where required ensure 24/7 operational support of our Data products.
  • Work closely with the other GTT squads to ensure alignment of roadmaps through understanding of dependencies.

Preferred candidate profile

Engineer with atleast 10 years experience

  • Ensure alignment with cloud-first, scalable technologies, leveraging Databricks,
  • AWS, and other modern data platforms.
  • Experience with cloud-based data technologies, particularly AWS, Databricks.
  • Experience with streaming platforms such as Kafka, Apache Pulsar.
  • Experience with a combination of Python, Scala, Spark and Java.
  • Extensive experience in data engineering, with a proven track record of leading and managing multi-disciplinary teams delivering complex data projects, including greenfield projects.
  • Ability to influence and drive change across the department, advocating for necessary improvements and investments.
  • Can lead technical discussions, inspire the team, and drive towards technical excellence, ensuring high-quality outcomes.
  • Understanding of data governance, privacy, and compliance regulations (e.g., GDPR).
  • Exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills to engage, negotiate, and collaborate effectively throughout the product lifecycle, ensuring successful outcomes.
  • Experience leading people and supporting their career development plans.
  • Demonstrated expertise in fostering and advancing a collaborative team culture.
  • Strong analytical and diagnostic skills, particularly concerning technical risks, issues, and constraints.
  • Senior principles, leading by example, showing work ethic and passionate professional attitude.
