Job Description

Role & responsibilities

1. Machine Setup

  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and work instructions.
  • Select appropriate tooling, inserts, work holding devices, and cutting parameters.
  • Load programs into the CNC lathe/turning center.
  • Set zero points, tool offsets, and work offsets.
  • Perform machine warm-up and calibration procedures.

2. Operating CNC Turning Machines

  • Run CNC turning machines (lathes) safely and efficiently.
  • Monitor machine operation, cutting performance, and tool wear.
  • Adjust feed rates, spindle speeds, and tool paths as needed.
  • Change tools and inserts when required.
  • Ensure continuous production while preventing downtime.

3. Quality Inspection

  • Use measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, bore gauges, height gauges, and surface finish testers.
  • Perform first-article inspection and in-process checks.
  • Verify that parts meet dimensional tolerances and surface finish requirements.
  • Document inspection results and identify any non-conformance.

4. Maintenance and Troubleshooting

  • Perform routine preventive maintenance (cleaning, lubrication, coolant checks)
  • Troubleshoot machine alarms, tool breakages, and dimensional inaccuracies.
  • Report mechanical issues to maintenance or supervisors.
  • Keep the machine and work area clean and organized (5S practices).

5. Production and Documentation

  • Record daily production data, part counts, scrap, and downtime.
  • Follow job travelers, work orders, and production schedules.
  • Maintain proper documentation for quality systems (ISO/AS9100 if applicable).
  • Follow company procedures for traceability and material handling.

6. Safety Responsibilities

  • Follow all machine safety protocols and use PPE.
  • Understand emergency stop procedures and safe loading/unloading practices.
  • Avoid unsafe behaviors such as reaching into a moving machine.
  • Report hazards and near-misses promptly.

7. Collaboration and Communication

  • Work with engineers, programmers, and quality personnel for problem-solving.
  • Provide feedback on tooling performance and machining improvements.
  • Assist in training new operators when required.

Optional (Depending on Experience Level)

Advanced Operator / Setter Responsibilities

  • Edit minor CNC programs (G-code adjustments).
  • Optimize cutting parameters for productivity and tool life.
  • Assist with complex setups and multi-axis turning centers.
  • Knowledge of FANUC, Siemens, Mazak, or Haas controls.
