Building Teleplan Billing Engine For Simple Care Clinic

About the Role

We are building a custom healthcare platform for the Canadian market (BC MSP). We need a strong backend engineer who can build:

1. A real-time Eligibility Verification Service

takes patient data
calls an external telecom-style service (Teleplan POS) returns ACTIVE / INACTIVE / NOT FOUND / ERROR fully logged, stable, and reliable

2. A new, clean-room Healthcare Billing Engine

generates fixed-width claim files
handles batch submissions via SFTP parses remittance files maintains sequence numbers maps error codes reconciles payment results integrates with our EMR (FHIR-based)

You do not need previous healthcare or Teleplan experience but you must be excellent at reading specifications and implementing file-based protocols.

Required Skillset

• Strong in Node.js/TypeScript or Java (Spring Boot)
  
• Experience building backend systems with strict rules

• Able to read and implement specification-based protocols
  
• Experience with file processing (fixed-width, CSV, EDI, flat files)
  
• Strong skills in string parsing, data validation, transformation logic
  
• Familiar with SFTP automation (upload/download, retries, checks)
  
• Very strong debugging, attention to detail, and architectural discipline
  

Nice-to-Have

• Experience with any healthcare, insurance, banking, or telecom system
  
• Experience integrating with government APIs
  
• Experience with HL7/FHIR or similar standards
  
• Has worked with legacy formats or strict spec systems
  
• Experience with Medplum (FHIR backend)
  
• AWS knowledge (S3, Lambda, Secrets Manager)

1. Real-Time Eligibility Service

• Accepts PHN + patient demographics
  
• Calls an external service (Teleplan POS)
  
• Normalizes responses (ACTIVE/NOT_FOUND/INACTIVE/ERROR)
  
• Integrates with our booking system (scheduler)
  

2. Billing Engine (MVP Production)

• Fixed-width MSP claim file generator
  
• SFTP batch submitter
  
• Remittance file (RA) parser
  
• Error-code mapping + reconciliation
  
• Secure, auditable, production-grade microservice
  

WHAT I AM NOT LOOKING FOR:

• Only a front-end developer (Angular/React)
  
• Only worked on basic CRUD APIs
  
• Not comfortable reading long specification documents
  
• Not comfortable with strict, detail-heavy backend logic
  
• Not strong in SFTP/file-based workflows
  
• Not able to work independently on backend architecture
