We partner with governments, markets, and civil society to build resilient livelihoods for all. We are a collective of some of India’s best leaders and entrepreneurs from across the industry, academia, government, and development sectors, and our work is organised across multiple verticals: Direct programs - 65% of India’s poor live in rural areas, and they face unique and complex challenges, including cultivation being the main source of income for small farmers, but it is unpredictable or marginal farmers & landless labourers being tied to unpredictable wages, indebtedness and frequent migration or the most excluded households have limited livelihood opportunities and lack access to the basic needs. Our direct programs work towards empowering rural communities to build livelihoods. Livelihood ecosystem - A thriving ecosystem is key to solving large problems. It creates an environment for ideas to flourish and allows effective solutions to scale faster and further. India has fast-growing communities of problem solvers working on its development challenges. It is well within our collective means to support them and enhance their ability to create change. Through our ecosystem work, we are working to build a thriving livelihoods ecosystem in partnership with governments, markets and civil society. What are we solving for in the InSight program? India’s aspiration to become a USD 30 trillion economy by 2047 is anchored in strengthening the productivity of the current workforce and enhancing the participation of the untapped workforce. Thereby creating additional economic value for the nation and fostering prosperity for all. One significant aspect that hampers participation and productivity for individuals above 35 is “uncorrected presbyopia,” an age-related decline in near vision. A simple and affordable solution in “reading glasses” can enhance productivity by 33% and boost income by 20% (RCTs conducted in Assam & Bangladesh; substantiated also through pilot captured in the report - Reading glasses and livelihood). The economic value of provisioning reading glasses to all Indians struggling with uncorrected presbyopia is USD 16 billion, and with 85% of people without access to reading glasses being residents of rural India, it amplifies the potential of the intervention to create a thriving rural livelihood ecosystem. Considering the opportunity to unlock the nation's untapped productivity potential and the impact on the lives of millions, The/Nudge has taken up the mandate to play the orchestrator by collaborating with central and state governments, markets, and civil society to make India presbyopia-free. We are developing robust processes and systems by leveraging technology and partner networks to ensure that every Indian struggling with uncorrected presbyopia can access a pair of glasses within the next decade. We have already conducted a pilot in Bidar, Karnataka, where we screened ~1,000 individuals above the age of 35 and witnessed that 66% had never gone through an eye screening, 75% needed reading glasses that we distributed as part of the pilot, and 55% of those people were first-time wearers. Our economic inclusion journey for 25 million Indians has reached 10 states with $250M of government funding to cover 1.25M people. What are we solving for? Millions in India experience uncorrected presbyopia, a near-vision impairment affecting one in three people over 30, with cases now appearing as early as 35. Globally, presbyopia is the most common cause of vision impairment, impacting over 800 million people. In India alone, 300 million people live with this condition, contributing to $14 billion in lost productivity each year. For many, especially in rural communities, clear near vision is essential for work and daily activities. Without access to timely solutions, individuals may face challenges in earning a livelihood. However, studies from Assam and Bangladesh show that a simple intervention—reading glasses—can increase productivity by 34% and boost income by 20%. Despite the clear benefits, several factors have made it difficult for people to access reading glasses at scale: With only one trained optometrist per 180,000 people, access to professional eye care remains a challenge in many areas. Many individuals aren’t aware that their near-vision difficulties can be easily corrected, and some hesitate to wear glasses due to social and cultural perceptions. Bringing reading glasses to remote and rural areas requires innovative and community-driven approaches to ensure affordability and reach. Through its InSight program, The/Nudge Institute is collaborating with central and state governments to make India presbyopia-free using a community-led model. Position Overview: The/Nudge is working with the Government of Meghalaya to help enable access to affordable near-vision glasses by targeting people above the age of 35, mainly in rural areas. Role: Insight Program Tamil Nadu Operations Lead Location: Any of the following districts in Tamil Nadu - Tiruvallur district; Kannivadi in Dindigul district and Thiruchuli in Viruthunagar district Reporting To: Entrepreneurship Program Head, InSight Program Duration: 3 Months (Can be extended based on mutual understanding) About the Program: The InSight team is dedicated to creating a Presbyopia-free India, with a special focus on empowering rural communities. Over 300 million Indians suffer from uncorrected presbyopia (distorted near vision), and over 70 million work in occupations that require clear near vision. This condition leads to $14 billion in annual productivity losses in India alone, disproportionately impacting rural livelihoods. Yet, a simple solution reading glasses can boost productivity by 34% and income by 20%, as randomized controlled trials conducted in Assam and Bangladesh demonstrated. Hence the InSight team, in this context, is embarking on a program to develop a market-driven model that empowers entrepreneurs to sell reading glasses to beneficiaries in need. The idea is that the InSight team, in collaboration with its partners, will train entrepreneurs in presbyopia screening and the dispensing of reading glasses. These entrepreneurs will then conduct door-to-door screenings within their designated areas, selling reading glasses to individuals who fail the vision test. This approach aims to establish a sustainable business model for the entrepreneurs while improving livelihoods by addressing presbyopia among the beneficiaries.
