Role & responsibilities

Job Summary:

The Staff Nurse in the NICU is responsible for providing specialized nursing care to critically ill and premature newborns. The nurse monitors, assesses, and manages the infants health status, administers medications, supports life-sustaining treatment, and ensures that all care is delivered in accordance with hospital protocols and neonatal care standards.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Patient Care & Monitoring

  • Provide comprehensive nursing care to premature and critically ill neonates.
  • Monitor and record vital signs, oxygen saturation, and other parameters accurately.
  • Assist with neonatal resuscitation and emergency procedures.
  • Maintain thermoregulation and ensure appropriate feeding methods (tube feeding, TPN, breast milk).
  • Observe and report any changes in the infants condition promptly to the physician.

2. Medication & Treatment Administration

  • Administer medications, IV fluids, and parenteral nutrition as per physician orders.
  • Prepare and manage infusion pumps, ventilators, and phototherapy units.
  • Ensure correct dosage, route, and timing of medication administration.
  • Maintain aseptic techniques during all procedures.

3. Equipment Handling

  • Operate and monitor specialized NICU equipment: incubators, warmers, infusion pumps, CPAP, ventilators, and monitors.
  • Check functionality, calibration, and cleanliness of all equipment before use.
  • Report equipment malfunction to biomedical or maintenance teams.

4. Documentation & Reporting

  • Maintain accurate and timely nursing notes, intake/output charts, and medication records.
  • Record and update care plans, progress notes, and incident reports.
  • Assist in shift handovers with detailed patient updates.

6. Infection Control & Safety

  • Adhere strictly to NICU infection control and isolation protocols.
  • Ensure sterilization of instruments and cleanliness of incubators and surrounding areas.
  • Use PPE and follow hospital guidelines to prevent cross-infection.

7. Teamwork & Professional Development

  • Collaborate with neonatologists, pediatricians, respiratory therapists, and other healthcare staff.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, audits, and training sessions.
  • Stay updated with current neonatal nursing practices and research

Preferred candidate profile

  • Education:

    GNM / B.Sc. Nursing / Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing.
  • Registration:

    Registered Nurse & Midwife with State Nursing Council.
  • Experience:

    Minimum 16 years of experience in NICU preferred (freshers with strong interest in neonatology may be considered).
