Senior Azure SQL Database Administrator

We are seeking a highly skilled Database Administrator to lead performance tuning efforts across our Azure-based data platforms, including Azure SQL and Synapse Analytics. This role focuses on optimizing query performance, managing workloads, and ensuring scalable, high-performance data operations.

Key Accountabilities

• Monitor, analyse, and optimise the performance of Azure SQL Databases and Synapse Dedicated SQL Pools.
• Conduct in-depth troubleshooting of slow-running queries and long-duration batch jobs using execution plans, wait statistics, and index tuning.
• Implement and manage indexing strategies, statistics updates, and partitioning techniques to optimize large datasets.
• Tune batch workloads and ETL/ELT processes to ensure reliable throughput and minimal resource contention.
• Utilize Query Store, DMVs, and extended events to proactively detect and resolve performance issues.
• Collaborate with developers and data engineers to review SQL code and improve database access patterns.
• Manage workload isolation and resource governance in Azure Synapse to optimize concurrent query performance.
• Maintain best practices for capacity planning, scalability, and high availability within Azure-hosted environments.
• Support deployments, schema changes, and configuration updates with minimal performance impact.

Skills

• Deep knowledge of SQL Server internals and performance tuning methodologies.
• Strong experience with Azure SQL Database and Azure Synapse Analytics.
• Proficiency with query optimization, execution plan analysis, and index tuning.
• Experience tuning batch workloads, ETL/ELT jobs, and managing concurrency and workload isolation.
• Familiarity with Query Store, Dynamic Management Views, and Azure Monitor.
• Understanding of resource classes, distribution strategies, and table design in Synapse.
• Knowledge of T-SQL, PowerShell, and Azure CLI for administrative tasks.
• Experience working in DevOps or CI/CD environments, including schema version control and deployment automation.
• Excellent problem-solving and communication skills, especially in cross-functional technical teams
