Job Description

In the School of Physics, Engineering and Technology (PET) at the University of York, you will focus on studying the atomic and electronic structure of photocatalysts under in-situ conditions in environmental STEM/TEM. The project aims to translate this knowledge into practical applications related to air purification. This collaborative project involves working with the York-JEOL Nanocentre and the Photocatalysis group in the Department of Chemistry. Your responsibilities will include synthesis, characterisation, and testing of metal oxide photocatalysts for air purification applications. You will join a research team focused on electron microscopy characterisation of materials, environmental TEM/STEM development, and materials modelling. As part of your role, you will manage your own project and develop new in-situ in-operando electron microscopy characterisation approaches. The York-JEOL Nanocentre provides access to advanced electron microscopes, including the environmental open cell double corrected STEM/TEM system ARTEMIS. The School of PET aims to deliver world-leading research and innovation in both fundamental and applied areas while promoting an environment of equality, diversity, and inclusion. Key Responsibilities: - Study the atomic and electronic structure of photocatalysts under in-situ conditions - Collaborate with research teams in electron microscopy characterisation and materials modelling - Manage your own project and implement new electron microscopy characterisation approaches - Work on the synthesis, characterisation, and testing of metal oxide photocatalysts for air purification Qualifications Required: - PhD in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, or related field - Experience in operating transmission electron microscopes and spectroscopies - Track record of high-quality peer-reviewed publications - Excellent communication skills The role offers a unique opportunity to co-lead the development of atomic-scale in-situ/in-operando environmental STEM/TEM techniques under light illumination. You will collaborate closely with Tronox, an industry leader in TiO2 nanoparticles and pigments production. The University of York encourages diversity and inclusivity, particularly welcoming applications from individuals identifying as Black, Asian, or from Minority Ethnic backgrounds. If you have any informal enquiries, you can contact Prof Vlado Lazarov at vlado.lazarov@york.ac.uk or pet-hr@york.ac.uk as the second contact. The University values diversity, inclusivity, and equality for all its staff and students.,
