Electrical Safety Specialist Role Objective To ensure all electrical work during the construction of the thermal power plant complies with safety regulations and standards, minimizing the risk of electrical hazards such as shock, arc flash, fire, and electrocution. Education Qualification: Diploma in Electrical Engineering OR B.E./B.Tech in Electrical Engineering Certifications: NFPA 70E CEST (Certified Electrical Safety Technician) NEBOSH (International General Certificate) ADIS / PDIS (Advanced/Post Diploma in Industrial Safety) Key Roles & Responsibilities 1. Electrical Safety Planning & Implementation Develop and implement site-specific Electrical Safety Procedures . Ensure electrical safety plans are incorporated in project method statements. Participate in Job Safety Analysis (JSA) and Permit to Work (PTW) for electrical jobs. 2. Site Supervision & Risk Assessment Monitor and inspect ongoing electrical works (cable laying, switchgear installation, testing, etc.). Ensure Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) is implemented correctly. Identify unsafe electrical practices or installations and take immediate corrective action. Perform risk assessments for high-voltage and energized work zones. 3. Compliance & Standards Ensure compliance with: IS standards (Indian Standards for electrical installations) IEC/IEEE standards Electricity Act & Rules Site-specific and international safety standards (e.g., NFPA 70E , OSHA , ISO 45001 ). Coordinate with statutory authorities or electrical inspectors as needed. 4. Testing, Tools & Equipment Safety Ensure proper insulation testing, earth resistance testing, and megger testing is conducted. Verify tools, cables, and equipment are tested and certified (e.g., ELCBs, breakers, panels). Monitor the safe use of portable electrical tools and temporary distribution boards. 5. Training & Awareness Conduct electrical safety induction for electrical engineers, supervisors, and technicians. Organize training on: Arc flash hazards Use of PPE in electrical tasks LOTO procedures Safe energization and de-energization Support toolbox talks on electrical topics during daily safety briefings. 6. Incident Prevention & Investigation Investigate all electrical near-miss incidents , shocks , or electrical fires . Conduct root cause analysis and update procedures accordingly. Implement preventive measures and retrain involved personnel. 7. Documentation & Audits Maintain up-to-date logs of: PTWs for electrical jobs Inspection reports Training records Electrical safety checklist audits Assist during internal and third-party EHS audits with evidence and compliance support. 8. Emergency Preparedness Develop electrical emergency response procedures. Ensure the availability and maintenance of firefighting equipment (CO, DCP extinguishers near panels). Train staff on electrical fire response and first aid for electric shock . Skills : Deep understanding of high/low voltage systems Familiarity with switchyard, control room, and transformer safety Strong communication for training and reporting
