Role summary
This role involves handling and examining surgical specimens, ensuring they are
properly labeled and identified. The job includes performing detailed gross examinations by measuring, weighing, and documenting the appearance of specimens, and preparing tissue samples according to standard protocols for further microscopic analysis. It also involves maintaining and troubleshooting lab equipment, such as microtomes and tissue processors. What the role entails Key accountabilities/ responsibilities
- Specimen Handling and Examination:
- Receive and verify surgical specimens, ensuring proper labeling and identification.
- Perform detailed gross examination of specimens, including size, weight, and appearance.
- Dissect and prepare tissue samples according to standard protocols, ensuring proper fixation and preservation for microscopic analysis.
Documentation and Reporting :
- Accurately document gross findings, including measurements, weights, and descriptive observations, in pathology reports.
- Collaborate with pathologists to determine appropriate tissue sections for microscopic examination.
- Ensure proper labelling and tracking of specimens throughout the grossing process.
Quality Control and Compliance :
- Adhere to established laboratory protocols, quality control measures, and Safety guidelines to maintain specimen integrity and prevent contamination.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area, following laboratory safety procedures and regulations.
Collaboration and Communication:
- Work closely with pathologists, laboratory technicians, and other healthcare professionals to ensure accurate and timely diagnosis.
- Communicate any unusual findings or potential discrepancies in specimens to the supervising pathologist promptly
Equipment Maintenance and Troubleshooting:
- Operate and maintain grossing equipment, including microtomes, tissue processors, and other laboratory instruments.
- Identify and troubleshoot equipment malfunctions, coordinating repairs and maintenance as necessary.
Continuous Learning and Development:
- Stay current with advancements in histopathology, grossing techniques, and diagnostic criteria.
- Participate in continuing education, workshops, and training programs to enhance knowledge and skill
