Job Description

The Infection Control Nurse (ICN) is responsible for planning, implementing, and monitoring infection prevention and control (IPC) practices in the hospital. The ICN ensures compliance with national and international infection control standards, conducts surveillance, and educates staff to minimize healthcare-associated infections (HAIs).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct regular surveillance of hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) and report findings to the Infection Control Committee.
  • Monitor infection control practices across departments, including hand hygiene, PPE use, biomedical waste management, environmental cleanliness, etc.
  • Investigate outbreaks and participate in root cause analysis.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of infection control policies and procedures.
  • Educate and train healthcare workers on infection prevention protocols.
  • Audit isolation precautions and ensure compliance in handling infectious patients.
  • Monitor sterilization and disinfection practices in critical areas (OT, ICU, CSSD, etc.).
  • Maintain and analyze infection-related data and generate monthly/quarterly reports for management and regulatory compliance.
  • Participate in hospital committees such as HICC and Quality Council.
  • Coordinate with housekeeping and nursing teams for infection control compliance.

Qualifications:

  • B.Sc. Nursing / GNM with additional certification or training in Infection Control (preferred).
  • Registered Nurse with valid nursing council registration.
  • Minimum 1–3 years of experience in clinical nursing; experience in infection control or quality assurance preferred.

Skills Required:

  • Strong knowledge of infection prevention and control standards (CDC, WHO, NABH, etc.).
  • Excellent observation, analytical, and auditing skills.
  • Good communication and teaching skills.
  • Proficient in report writing and data analysis.
  • Ability to train and influence cross-functional teams.

Desirable Certifications:

  • Certified Infection Control Nurse (CIC) – if available
  • Training from NABH, WHO, or CDC on IPC
  • Hospital Infection Control Training Program certification
