Job Description

 

The librarian is responsible for overseeing the effective operation and development of the school library. This includes managing physical and digital resources to support academic instruction, independent learning, and research. The role also involves nurturing a culture of reading and enhancing students' information literacy.

Key Responsibilities:

  • 1. Library Operations & Administration
  • Organize, catalogue, and maintain a wide range of learning materials including books, journals, and digital content.
  • Develop and implement library policies and standard operating procedures.
  • Maintain an up-to-date inventory and resource management system.
  • Oversee budgeting, acquisitions, and coordination with vendors or suppliers.
  • 2. Academic Support for Students and Staff
  • Assist students in locating and using information effectively.
  • Provide faculty with academic and research support through relevant materials.
  • Conduct orientations and training sessions on how to use library services and digital tools.
  • 3. Resource Development
  • Select and procure resources that align with the curriculum and learning goals.
  • Ensure that the collection is current, relevant, and meets diverse learning needs.
  • Periodically remove obsolete or damaged materials to maintain a high-quality collection.
  • 4. Digital and Technological Integration
  • Administer e-resources, databases, and digital subscriptions.
  • Maintain and update the digital library catalogue to ensure ease of access.
  • Support the integration of educational technology into library services.
  • 5. Compliance, Monitoring & Reporting
  • Ensure all library practices comply with institutional guidelines and accreditation standards.
  • Keep detailed records of library usage, circulation, and resource management.
  • Prepare periodic reports and assist in audits and evaluation processes related to library functions.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Bachelors or Masters degree in Library Science, Information Science, or a related discipline.
  • Previous experience in a school or academic library setting is desirable.
  • Proficiency in cataloguing, classification, and use of library automation systems.
  • Knowledge of digital libraries and educational technologies.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and people-management skills.
  • Ability to foster a reading culture and support lifelong learning.
