Key Responsibilities

ICU nurses evaluate patient progress hourly, identify changes in vital signs like heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen levels, and update physicians promptly. They administer medications, manage IV lines and ventilators, perform wound care, and respond to emergencies such as cardiac arrests. Detailed documentation of assessments, care plans, and fluid balance supports continuity of care.

Required Skills

Strong critical thinking enables quick analysis of patient data and adjustment of treatment plans based on age and condition. Excellent communication skills facilitate updates to families and teamwork with multidisciplinary staff. Emotional intelligence helps provide support during high-stress situations while maintaining hygiene and infection control protocols.

Educational Requirements

A Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or equivalent is typically mandatory, following completion of a recognized nursing diploma or degree program approved by bodies like the Indian Nursing Council (INC). Critical care nursing postgraduate diplomas or specialized ICU training programs, such as those from JIPMER or NSCCM protocols, provide essential advanced knowledge.

Certifications and Licensing

Active Registered Nurse (RN) licensure from state nursing councils (e.g., Maharashtra Nursing Council for Pune-based roles) is required, along with Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications. Preferred credentials include Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN) or equivalent Indian certifications like Post Basic ICU Nursing from recognized institutes.

Experience and Skills

Minimum 5+ years of acute care or ICU experience is standard, with proficiency in ventilators, hemodynamic monitoring, and electronic health records. Strong knowledge of pharmacology, infection control, and patient assessment, plus physical stamina for 12-hour shifts, are essential.
