A hostess is a front-of-house employee responsible for greeting guests, managing reservations and the waitlist, and ensuring a positive first impression of the establishment. Key duties include answering phones, seating guests, providing menus and wait time estimates, and maintaining a clean and organized waiting area. Hostesses also help coordinate with servers to optimize table turnover and support staff during busy periods. Core responsibilities

• Guest relations: Greet guests warmly, manage waitlists with accurate wait times, and escort them to their tables.
• Reservations: Take phone reservations and manage the reservation system, including noting special occasions or dietary needs.
• Seating and flow: Optimize seating to ensure an even workload for the wait staff and maintain an organized floor plan.
• Communication: Answer phone calls and customer inquiries, and communicate with servers about guest needs and specials.
• Front-of-house maintenance: Keep the reception and waiting areas clean, organized, and presentable.
• Menu knowledge: Be knowledgeable about the menu, including specials, ingredients, and preparation methods.

Additional duties

• Process customer payments in smaller establishments.
• Assist servers and other staff during busy periods.
• Handle guest complaints professionally.
