Job Description

As a Phlebotomist, your main responsibility will be to serve patients by identifying the best method for retrieving blood samples and other specimens. You will be preparing specimens for laboratory testing and performing screening procedures. It is crucial to verify test requisitions by comparing information with the nursing station log and addressing any discrepancies to the unit personnel. Patient identification verification and explanation of sampling procedures are also part of your duties. Your role will involve obtaining blood specimens through venipunctures and finger sticks while maintaining specimen integrity by utilizing aseptic technique, following department procedures, and observing isolation protocols. Collaborating with nursing personnel to ensure appropriate drug dose to collection time for therapeutic drug-monitoring assays is essential for accurate collections. Tracking collected specimens, monitoring glucose levels, and performing bleeding-times tests are also key responsibilities. Maintaining quality results by adhering to department procedures, testing schedules, and recording results in the quality-control log is crucial. You will be responsible for identifying and reporting needed changes to ensure quality outcomes. Upholding a safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards, procedures, and legal regulations is imperative. In situations with unusual test orders, you will be required to contact the physician, pathologist, nursing station, or reference laboratory. Referring unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification and notifying the supervisor of any unresolved orders is part of your duties. Continuously updating your job knowledge through educational opportunities, professional publications, and participation in professional organizations is encouraged to enhance your skills. Your commitment to serving and protecting the hospital or healthcare facility community is vital. Adherence to professional standards, institutional policies and procedures, federal, state, and local requirements, as well as the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, is expected to maintain a high level of patient care and safety.,
