Key Responsibilities 1. Surgical Management Perform surgical procedures such as: GI cancer surgeries (esophagus, stomach, colon, pancreas, liver) Laparoscopic cholecystectomy, hernia repairs, appendectomy Colorectal, bariatric, hepatobiliary, and pancreatic surgeries Emergency procedures for GI bleeding, perforation, or obstruction Handle complex elective and emergency GI cases independently. 2. Pre- and Post-Operative Care Conduct pre-operative evaluations, risk assessments, and obtain consents. Manage post-operative care including monitoring for complications (e.g. leaks, infections). Collaborate with intensivists and physicians for co-morbid condition management. 3. Multidisciplinary Coordination Work closely with departments like gastroenterology, oncology, hepatology, pathology, radiology , and critical care. Participate in tumor boards and surgical planning meetings . Coordinate with dieticians and physiotherapists for holistic patient recovery. 4. Patient Education & Counseling Educate patients and families on diagnoses, treatment plans, surgical risks, and recovery expectations. Provide emotional support and clear communication throughout the surgical journey. 5. Documentation & Compliance Maintain accurate surgical notes, discharge summaries, and operative records. Ensure adherence to hospital protocols, infection control measures, and NABH/NABL/JCI standards . Participate in clinical audits and quality improvement initiatives. 6. Academic & Training Duties (For Teaching Hospitals) Mentor medical students, interns, and residents in GI surgery techniques. Participate in academic sessions, workshops, CME programs, and research. Publish clinical studies and contribute to surgical innovation. Qualifications Essential: MBBS + MS / DNB in General Surgery MCh / DNB in Surgical Gastroenterology OR Fellowship in GI / Laparoscopic / HPB Surgery (recognized by IAGES / ASI / SGEI or international boards) Desirable: Experience in laparoscopic and minimally invasive GI procedures Training in GI oncology or liver/pancreatic surgery BLS/ACLS certification for surgical emergency readiness Skills & Competencies Advanced surgical skills in GI and abdominal surgery Strong diagnostic and decision-making ability Expertise in laparoscopic and open techniques Clear and empathetic communication Multidisciplinary teamwork and leadership Adherence to surgical ethics and patient safety standards

Key Responsibilities 1. Teaching & Academic Duties Deliver lectures and tutorials on: Anatomy and physiology of the gastrointestinal system Common and complex GI disorders (GERD, IBD, hepatitis, cirrhosis, pancreatitis, GI cancers) Diagnostic techniques (endoscopy, colonoscopy, imaging, liver function tests) Gastrointestinal pharmacotherapy (e.g., PPIs, antiemetics, laxatives, immunosuppressants) Nutritional management and GI emergencies Facilitate clinical case discussions and bedside teaching (if in a clinical setting). Supervise students in research projects, case presentations, and practical sessions. Develop course content, MCQs, case-based assessments, and OSCEs. 2. Clinical Duties (For Medical Colleges / Teaching Hospitals) Participate in outpatient and inpatient gastroenterology services. Assist in and teach diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures (e.g., upper GI endoscopy, colonoscopy, ERCP). Guide residents and students during ward rounds, procedures, and case management. Provide mentorship in clinical decision-making and patient care. 3. Research & Scholarly Activities Conduct and support research in areas like: Hepatology, IBD, GI oncology, gut microbiome, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) Clinical trials related to GI therapeutics Publish in peer-reviewed medical journals and attend academic conferences. Assist in securing research grants and ethical clearance for projects. 4. Administrative & Institutional Involvement Contribute to departmental meetings and curriculum design. Participate in organizing CMEs, workshops, GI camps, and awareness programs. Serve on institutional committees (e.g., ethics, research, quality assurance). Qualifications Essential: MBBS with MD in Internal Medicine and DM / DNB in Gastroenterology Registered with medical council (as per national/state regulations) Desirable: Teaching experience at undergraduate/postgraduate level Experience in diagnostic and interventional endoscopy Peer-reviewed publications in gastroenterology journals Skills & Competencies Deep knowledge of gastrointestinal physiology, pathology, and clinical management Proficiency in endoscopic and diagnostic procedures (if clinically active) Strong teaching, mentoring, and academic writing abilities Research acumen and knowledge of evidence-based medicine Effective communication and interpersonal skills Familiarity with simulation-based teaching and digital tools (LMS, virtual endoscopy trainers, etc.)
