Engineer, Mechanical Design” is a member of SEDEMAC’s mechanical design team. The candidate is expected to work with an inter-disciplinary team on mechanical engineering aspects of the product development. The mechanical design team at SEDEMAC works predominantly on electronic controller packaging/casing design and electric motor design, for serial manufacturing and prototyping purposes.
Major Responsibilities:
- Design mechanical casing/packaging of electronic controllers, which many a times are expected to comply with ingress-protection specifications such as IP6K9K, IP67 etc., and expected to have immunity against vibrations, such as those experienced during on-road vehicular operation. In SEDEMAC’s context, power electronic controllers such as traction controllers have particularly complex mechanical assemblies.
- Design mechanical aspects of electric motors, with due consideration to alignment, balancing, vibration, sealing, NVH, thermal design, structural stability etc. Electric motors design at SEDEMAC will typically involve motors with power range varying between 150W to 10 kW.
- Design auxiliary test and support fixtures for validating performance of motor and
controllers. Examples of fixtures are:
- high-speed (> 10,000 RPM) mounting arrangement of electric motors on motor dyno test cells.
- fixtures for endurance testing of electronic controllers against vibration and wateringress requirements.
- Fabricate prototypes of motors, controllers and supporting fixtures, using optimal fabrication processes by interacting with SEDEMAC’s vendor ecosystem for designing and fabricating motors, controllers and supporting fixtures.
- Coordinate with other specialist team members in SEDEMAC to participate in performing FEA / CFD simulations, to genuinely reduce the number of iterations required to develop working prototypes and design. In the context of SEDEMAC, example FEA simulations are required:
- to de-risk compatibility of electronic controllers for given vibration requirements
- to ensure that the stress induced on PCB by mounting screws is within acceptable limits
- to ensure electric motor is NVH friendly
- Perform analysis as stack-of-tolerance, FMEA and other such formal analysis to increase confidence on product build during design phase.
- Represent SEDEMAC during customer interactions to integrate SEDEMAC’s products with the customer’s system.
- Support in root-cause-analysis in events of failure of product observed during validation / in serial life.
Technical Skills and Experience:
- Experience with several manufacturing processes and understanding of applicability of processes given problem statements – 3D printing, machining, casting, stamping, wirecutting etc.
- Proficiency in 2D / 3D CAD tools (PTC Creo and AutoCAD is a plus)
- First-principles based understanding of mechanical design aspects such as strength, rigidity, fatigue is desirable.
- Experience in FEA / CFD tools is desirable.
Managerial Skills and Experience:
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work with a cross-functional team.
- Sense of ownership and urgency when working in the company.
- Strong sense of ethics.
