Key duties and responsibilities

• Respond to emergency calls

  : An EMT must respond to dispatch calls for emergency medical assistance and operate emergency vehicles safely.

• Patient assessment

  : They assess the patient's condition to determine the nature and extent of the emergency and determine the necessary medical care.

• Provide basic life support

  : EMTs perform life-saving interventions such as CPR, controlling severe bleeding, and administering oxygen.

• Wound and trauma care

  : They apply bandages, splints, and other basic first-aid treatments to stabilize injuries.

• Patient transportation

  : An EMT is responsible for the safe and swift transport of patients to a medical facility, such as a hospital.

• Communicate with healthcare staff

  : EMTs must provide clear and effective communication with dispatchers, medical personnel, and hospital staff, relaying critical patient information.

• Documentation

  : They complete patient care reports and other documentation to accurately record the medical care provided.

• Equipment and vehicle maintenance

  : They ensure that the ambulance and all medical equipment are properly stocked, cleaned, and maintained.

• Follow protocols

  : EMTs must comply with applicable policies, standard operating procedures, and medical protocols.

Required skills and qualifications

• Certification

  : Must possess a valid EMT certification, which is obtained after completing a state-approved training program and passing a certification exam.

• Education

  : A high school diploma or GED is typically required.

• CPR and Basic Life Support (BLS)

  : Certification in CPR and BLS is essential.

• Physical fitness

  : The role requires physical strength for tasks such as lifting and moving patients and kneeling and bending.

• Calm under pressure

  : The ability to stay calm and make quick, sound decisions in high-stress, unpredictable situations is critical.

• Communication skills

  : Excellent interpersonal, listening, and speaking skills are necessary for effective communication with patients, families, and other emergency responders.

• Compassion and empathy

  : EMTs must be able to provide emotional support to patients and their families during a time of crisis.

• Problem-solving

  : Strong problem-solving skills are needed to quickly assess a situation and determine the appropriate course of treatment.

• Adaptability

  : EMTs must be adaptable, as every emergency call is different.
