Job Description

Core responsibilities

Dispensing and preparing medications:
Review and accurately fill prescriptions from physicians.
Verify the identity, strength, and purity of medications.
Compound and package medications according to legal requirements.
Patient counseling and education:
Instruct patients on the proper use, side effects, and storage of their medications.
Answer patient questions about drugs, medical equipment, and general health.
Provide advice on over-the-counter products and other healthcare supplies.
Safety and compliance:
Check for potential drug interactions, allergies, and contraindications based on a patient's medical history and other medications.
Monitor patient drug therapies to avoid adverse reactions.
Ensure all activities comply with federal, state, and local regulations.
Manage inventory, including proper storage and removal of expired medications.
Collaboration and administration:
Communicate with physicians and other healthcare providers about medication therapies.
Administer immunizations like flu shots.
Advise other healthcare workers on the proper use of medications.
Maintain detailed and accurate patient and pharmacy records.

Variations in duties

Community pharmacists typically work in drug stores or retail settings, focusing on dispensing and customer interaction.
Clinical pharmacists often work in hospitals or clinics, where they collaborate with doctors to manage patient medication therapy.
Specialized pharmacists, such as oncology pharmacists, focus on specific areas like compounding chemotherapy drugs and researching treatments for diseases like cancer.
