About IIHSs Urban Practitioners Programme for Capacity Building

The UPP is an education and capacity building programme for urban practitioners spanning disciplines and levels in public, private, academic and civil society sectors. IIHS believes that a citys transformation rests largely on the collective endeavours of practitioners who confront challenges through an informed, reflexive and creative manner. Through a portfolio of customised and open enrolment capacity development programmes and projects, the UPP offers institutions and practitioners new frameworks of knowledge, backed by a cohesive package of skills. Our portfolio spans sectors, disciplines and scales of practice and seeks to intervene at three levels:

  • Strategic perspectives and orientation of the practitioner to urban challenges;
  • Knowledge frameworks employed to appraise such challenges;
  • Execution skills to tackle them effectively and sustainably.

Position Overview:

We are looking for an expert and trainer in urban planning or urban social sciences, specializing in areas like transit-oriented development, land valuation planning, mobility, net zero buildings, etc. The ideal candidate must have a deep understanding of market dynamics, competition landscape, related financial and institutional approaches and a proven track record in delivering high-quality training and research.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Exploring New Partnerships:

    Initiate discussions with new partners on capacity-building programmes for their employees/officers in areas of urban social sciences;
  • Training Development and Delivery:

    Develop comprehensive training content and lead the delivery and coordination of training programs across the country;
  • Research Contribution:

    Contribute to primary and secondary research relevant to the UPPs thematic and general interests;
  • Reporting and Monitoring:

    Complete reporting and monitoring requirements for training and research activities;
  • Consultancy and Development:

    Assist in proposal development, impact assessment, translations, workshops, and training of trainers;
  • Travel:

    Travel as required to deliver training and support the UPPs activities nationwide.

Activities and Tasks

Responsibilities would include, but not be limited to, the following:

  • Developing training content for the UPPs capacity building programmes;
  • Leading the delivery and coordination of these programmes;
  • Completing the related reporting and monitoring requirements;
  • Contributing to primary and secondary research of thematic and general interest to the Capacity building team;
  • Participating in other UPP activities and initiatives including proposal development, impact assessment, translations, workshops, training of trainers, and other such activities;
  • Providing support to other IIHS activities including academics, research, training, practice, operations and others;
  • Participating in all activities of Institution-Building at IIHS; carrying out tasks as assigned by IIHS; and travelling on IIHS work within or outside the country as and when needed.

Structure and Reporting

The Consultant/ Senior Consultant Capacity Building will report to the Head Urban Practitioners Programme (UPP) at IIHS, or to any other person designated by the Head, and collaborate effectively with a diverse group of internal teams, external faculty/organizations, and students.

Person Specification

The ideal candidate should have:

  • About 8 10 years of relevant professional experience;
  • A Masters in Planning or any other relevant degree with special focus on transit-oriented development, land valuation, mobility, or net zero buildings;
  • Familiarity with the empirical and scholarly work around these themes;
  • Familiarity with the policy level and programmatic approaches to these themes at the Central and State levels;
  • Experience and exposure to projects in these thematic areas (this would be an added advantage);
  • The ability to train and teach on these themes;
  • Proficiency in MS Office;
  • Effective team-working and interpersonal skills;
  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Strong stakeholder management and good negotiation skills;
  • The ability to lead and mentor younger team members effectively.

Location

This position is based in Bengaluru and may entail travel to other locations in India.
