Role & responsibilities

Job Summary:

The on-call anaesthetics doctor plays a critical role in delivering perioperative and emergency anaesthetic care during out-of-hours and weekend shifts. This includes pre-operative assessment, safe administration of anaesthesia, airway and circulatory management, and critical care interventions. The role also supports urgent theatre cases, resuscitations, and deteriorating patients across hospital departments, including the Emergency Department and intensive care settings.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide anaesthetic care for emergency and out-of-hours surgical procedures under supervision.
  • Conduct rapid pre-operative assessments, ensure consent (where appropriate), and formulate anaesthetic plans.
  • Maintain airway management skills (including bag-mask ventilation, supraglottic devices, and intubation).
  • Assist with vascular access (peripheral cannulation, arterial lines where trained).
  • Participate in hospital-wide emergency response, including cardiac arrest calls and trauma activations.
  • Liaise with surgical and theatre teams to ensure smooth running of emergency lists.
  • Provide support for post-operative pain management, including PCA and epidural troubleshooting.
  • Support transfers of critically ill patients where appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and communicate effectively with senior staff.
  • Participate in regular handovers, ward rounds, and debriefs.

Supervision & Support:

  • Direct and indirect supervision by on-call anaesthetic registrar or consultant.
  • Support from ODPs, theatre staff, and ICU team for complex cases or deteriorating patients.
  • Access to senior decision-makers for complex anaesthetic decisions and emergencies.

Training & Development:

  • Opportunity to develop practical skills in airway management, regional anaesthesia, and critical care.
  • Involvement in simulation training, morbidity & mortality meetings, and clinical audits.
  • Encouraged to complete workplace-based assessments (WPBAs) in line with RCoA curriculum.

Person Specification:

Essential:

  • Full GMC registration
  • Completed Foundation Programme or equivalent
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) / Advanced Life Support (ALS) certified
  • Competence in core clinical skills (e.g. cannulation, prescribing)

Desirable:

  • Previous anaesthetics or ICU experience
  • Intermediate or advanced airway skills
  • Completed ACCS Anaesthetics modules (if applicable)
