A Level 2 (L2) Network Engineer is typically a mid-level IT professional responsible for maintaining and troubleshooting complex network systems. This role is often part of a tiered support model, where L1 handles basic issues, L2 deals with more complex problems, and L3 focuses on advanced troubleshooting and architecture. Key Responsibilities of an L2 Network Engineer: Network Troubleshooting & Support Diagnose and resolve network issues escalated from L1. Troubleshoot routing, switching, and connectivity issues. Use tools like Wireshark, SolarWinds, or PRTG for deeper analysis. Configuration & Maintenance Configure and maintain routers, switches, firewalls (e.g., Cisco, Juniper, Fortinet). Manage VLANs, VPNs, and subnetting. Apply access control lists (ACLs) and security policies. Monitoring & Performance Optimization Monitor network health and performance. Implement QoS, bandwidth shaping, and traffic prioritization. Analyze logs and metrics to prevent future outages. Documentation Create and update network topology diagrams. Maintain documentation for network configurations and procedures. Collaboration Work with other teams (L1, L3, SysAdmins, Security) to resolve cross-functional issues. Assist in network upgrades and migrations.
