is responsible for providing advanced technical expertise in the engineering, design, installation, integrity management, and maintenance of subsea and offshore pipeline systems. This role supports complex marine pipeline projects from concept through execution, ensuring compliance with industry standards, regulatory requirements, and best practices. The technologist acts as a subject-matter expert (SME) and mentor, guiding project teams and junior staff in delivering safe, reliable, and cost-effective pipeline solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Engineering & Design
- Lead and perform detailed engineering for subsea and offshore pipeline systems, including route selection, wall thickness design, stress analysis, and span assessments.
- Conduct and review engineering calculations (hydrodynamic loading, thermal expansion, free-span analysis, on-bottom stability, etc.).
- Develop and validate pipeline material specifications, corrosion protection strategies, and insulation systems.
- Ensure all design work complies with applicable codes (e.g., DNV-ST-F101, API, ASME, ISO).
- Project Execution & Technical Support
- Provide technical leadership during pipeline fabrication, testing, installation, and commissioning.
- Review contractor engineering documents, procedures, and method statements.
- Support installation engineering including S-lay, J-lay, reel-lay, towing, and trenching/burial operations.
- Troubleshoot technical issues during construction and offshore campaigns.
- Pipeline Integrity & Operations
- Lead pipeline integrity assessments and risk evaluations, including inline inspection (ILI) data interpretation.
- Develop Integrity Management Plans (IMP) and oversee inspection, monitoring, and maintenance programs.
- Evaluate damage mechanisms (corrosion, fatigue, upheaval buckling, geohazards) and recommend mitigation strategies.
- Research, Technology & Innovation
- Evaluate and implement emerging technologies in subsea materials, inspection, and monitoring systems.
- Support digital transformation initiatives such as digital twins, structural health monitoring, and data-driven integrity tools.
- Documentation & Compliance
- Prepare and review engineering reports, design dossiers, drawings, and technical specifications.
- Ensure compliance with international regulations and the requirements of classification societies.
- Contribute to HSE plans, hazard analyses (HAZID/HAZOP), and risk assessments.
- Leadership & Mentorship
- Mentor junior engineers and technologists, providing guidance on technical development and project execution.
- Coordinate with multidisciplinary teamsgeotechnical, structural, naval, and materials engineering.
- Participate in planning meetings, stakeholder reviews, and client presentations.
- Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Civil, Ocean, Subsea, or Marine Engineering (or related discipline). Master's degree preferred.
- 815+ years experience in marine or subsea pipeline engineering, installation, or integrity management.
- Proven track record working on major offshore projects (oil & gas, offshore wind, subsea CO?, hydrogen, etc.).
Technical Skills
- Strong knowledge of offshore pipeline design codes (DNV, API, ASME, ISO).
- Proficiency in engineering tools such as Pipeline Studio, OFFPIPE, Caesar II, OrcaFlex, ABAQUS, AutoPIPE, or equivalent.
- Expertise in installation engineering and subsea construction methodologies.
- Strong understanding of offshore geohazards and seabed interaction.
Soft Skills
- Excellent communication, reporting, and collaboration abilities.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills under tight deadlines.
- Ability to work independently and provide leadership within multidisciplinary teams.
Preferred Certifications
- Professional Engineer (PE) or Chartered Engineer (CEng) designation.
- Offshore safety certifications (e.g., BOSIET, HUET).
- NACE/AMPP corrosion-related certification (optional but beneficial).
Working Conditions
- Primarily office-based with occasional offshore or field visits.
- Travel may be required to fabrication yards, test sites, and installation vessels.
